MARATHON, Dec 2. Mouths watered at an eggnog party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. R Arnold. A bottle of Scotch made in 1701, bottled in 1811, Ayershire Scotland, was opened and served. The aged label noted the manufacture and bottling dates. The Arnold family found the stash in their Vermont home, stored by Mrs Arnold's father.

Mr and Mrs J W Ferguson mark their golden anniversary on December 25 with a gathering of family and friends. Christian church in Deming area announces Rev J A Kearns formerly of Deming New Mexico has been called as pastor succeeding Rev M A Dubler who resigned to take a Marfa pastorate. Rev and Mrs Kearns arrive this week and will preach at Sunday services featuring nostalgic gospel songs and old time hymns. An invitation is extended to members and the public to attend all services including Sunday school and Christmas sales contest at the Morrison store.

Mr and Mrs HG Watson won first prize in Alpine Garden Club residential outdoor lighting contest, with cooperation from Study Club Hi Progreso Lions Rotary and chamber of commerce. Second went to Mr and Mrs D B Barker. third to Mr and Mrs Otis E Seales. Second group prize of 19 went to Mr and Mrs Queer Roberts. Honorable mentions listed for several residents. Mrs J C Coleman praised beautification and noted out of town visitors from New Orleans appreciated the work.

Alpine readers share in a quirky note from Barry Beebee about a self invented word in print as the New Year approaches. The editor laments the term's goofy fate after one magazine appearance and thanks readers, merchants, and advertisers for 1938.
Helland Page of Austin was low bidder on the concrete bridge and paving program on West Helland avenue with a bid of 25,974 dollars. The Texas Highway Commission opened proposals December 21 in Austin for 0.8.90 and 67 West Alpine. Work on the route includes a concrete bridge over the arroyo and asphalt paving east from the Santa Fe underpass to Seventh street. Traffic will detour along the former US 90 route via Alpine during construction, routing north at the J C Penney corner and west on College to the new route edge of town. Van Horn resident engineer A J Adcock stated the project may begin in January and require about 100 working days.
C G Morrison and Company will enlarge their quarters to take the entire east side used by Milady Beauty Shop. The partition will be removed, giving about 18 extra feet width along the full length of the building. The beauty shop will relocate to the east side of the neighboring building beside the city offices.
Mrs J C Bird breeder of Herefords visited Merkel last week and bought two registered Pub Mean Domino bulls from W J and C M Largent known for show Herefords. Mr Woodward also purchased a Publican Domino bull to add to his herd. Miss Elizabeth Tomlinson and Miss Melba McMurry, UT Austin students, plan to return to Austin Sunday.
Alpine FFA members have been invited to participate in the feeder calf sale linked to the next national FFA convention. The chapter, via secretary Junior Walker, advised Federal agent James H. Pearson that they are glad to cooperate in the program.
