Marlin Ward of Alpine won 75 in gift certificates. Gilbert Chaver of Alpine received 50 and Mrs. D. B. Baker of Marathon won 25. Twenty six merchants participated, committee led by Bob Strom Sam Schulze and Homer Hudgins reported. Lights installed by West Texas Utilities Co and Joe Baxter overtime service. Hudgins noted extensive decorations in homes and stores. About 17 000 entries were collected for the drawing.

Alpine Big Bend events loom in January schedule
Alpine and the Big Bend Davis Mountains area prepare a busy January with school reopenings at Alpine Public Schools January 2 and Sul Ross State College January 3. Brewster County voters will decide January 12 on funding a $225,000 hospital addition with half funded by Hill Burton. The project includes 16 private rooms, bath, solarium, recovery, ICU and nurse’s station. January 15 hosts the Chamber of Commerce banquet at the Holland Hotel Ballroom with Dr. W R White as speaker. The Big Bend livestock show expands January 18–19 adding wool classes and two horse colt classes.

Two Accidents Reported Near Alpine Fort Davis Area
Two minor crashes were investigated by State Highway Patrolman Jean Pate during Christmas holidays. A 15-year-old, Jesus Bustamantes, suffered facial and head injuries when a car driven by 18-year-old Ruben Brown struck a bridge near Fort Davis on the Balmorhea highway at 3 20 a.m. on December 25. Bustamantes was treated at Brewster County Memorial Hospital in Alpine and released. A separate incident involved a vehicle driven by Robert Duane Rogers of El Paso pulling a small trailer that hit three safety posts on Highway 90, 17 miles east of Alpine, at 3 55 p.m. on December 25. the trailer overturned but neither Rogers nor his wife were injured. Patrolman Pate noted icy highways from a cold wave, urging cautious driving. The report also notes Christmas visits by local families, including the Kays, Smiths, and Francises from El Paso, Midland, and San Antonio.
