War Department tightens SS quota and calls information

The War department has ruled that information concerning quotas and calls by the Selective Service system is restricted. National headquarters issued the order, stating no information will be given by Selective Service agencies about quotas or calls. Local offices urge registrants to keep their home addresses updated with the local board.

Old Homestead Musquiz In Musquiz Canyon Preserved by Hiway Dept

Fort Davis reports state highway commission orders preservation of the Manuel Musquiz adobe homestead ruins in Musquiz canyon along the Fort Davis Alpine road. Part of the old home and corral walls remain in a wayside park tract donated this year by Mr and Mrs RD Mulhern of Fort Davis. The Musquiz family founded the homestead in the mid 1880s and likely left during the Civil War.

Rangers Scout Big Bend to Prevent European Aliens

Captain Ernest Best of San Angelo heads Company E Texas Rangers along with four customs officers and two border patrolmen on a Big Bend scouting trip last week. Rangers included Pet Crawford Leo Bishop and Jim Flournoy with customs officers Sgt Lake Webb Mack Tarwater Jim Shoemake and Joe Ray. No details of the survey were released.

Widening Road Out of Fort Davis Progress Report

Fort Davis report notes completion of a blacktop widening project on a state road extending north from the Dinna area toward the observatory. The prior summer widened to about 30 feet and last week added roughly 18 feet on the outer side to the curbing line. Kit Carson Name Carved On Rock In New Mexico Report

Report authenticates belief Kit Carson carved his name on a boulder at Rockpile wayside park in the Davis mountains. A 1924 Dearborn Independent article and a New Mexico carving with initials C support that Carson may have been in the area, with Dec 12 and an 1838 or 1858 date noted.

Rotarians Honor Anns With Banquet and Program

Alpine Rotarians plan a Methodist church banquet next Tuesday at 7 pm in the basement for Rotarians Anns and invited guests. A program with music will follow at 7:30 in the auditorium. Tickets will be allocated to Rotarians for their Anns and guests with advance counts required. The public may attend the auditorium program and enjoy performances. All Rotarians should attend as this is the only meeting before January 8.

Fifth Grade Paper Drive Aids Defense Program

Alpine schools fifth grade sponsors a local project to gather old newspapers and waste papers for defense needs. Accepts clean old papers. deliver to ward school or contact Miss Peterson or Miss Ward if delivery is not possible. Each shell fired across the English Channel is valued at 3,500 dollars.
