Miss Mary Virginia McIntyre has been selected as Miss Alpine to serve as princess in the Sun Bowl carnival ceremonies in El Paso on New Year’s Day. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wells McIntyre and a senior at Alpine High School. Julia Gentry will represent Sul Ross College as princess. Both will travel to El Paso next week for coronation events and related social activities.

Actual paving work on the Fort Davis Alpine road has begun with about six miles laid by early week. Completion is hoped by January as asphalt and crushed rock are laid at roughly a mile per day, promising a fast, mile a minute highway for twenty five miles. Local travelers anticipate quick trips to shows or the dentist. Mrs Vance of Los Angeles and Mr Stewart of Monrovia visited en route to Mexico City for the holidays.

Community Tree To Be Held Tonite
A community Christmas tree sponsored by the Lions club and Legion Auxiliary will be held at the Legion hall Thursday evening at 7 30 o'clock. City Water Supply Approved By State Health Dept
Alpine water users can be assured the city water is free from contamination. City Secretary M H Moorman said water samples are sent to the State Health department at regular intervals and reports are favorable. The latest report for the sample sent Dec 11 reads Good No Contamination. Mr and Mrs ET Pettit and family left Monday for Christmas with relatives in Fort Worth. Their son Edward a student at Texas A & M returned home Sunday.

Fort Davis Lad Succeeds With Water Trap For Raccoons
Eighteen year old Myer McBride of Fort Davis explains a trap method to catch raccoons. He uses a trap by a stream with bright tinfoil on the trigger to lure the animal into water where it is caught. A substitute is a shiny half dollar if foil is unavailable. Trapping is described as cruel by some, yet seen as a pest control measure.

Hovey Dome test hole cleared after long delay
The Hovey Dome test hole northeast of Alpine in Pecos County has been cleared of the packet and pipe lost two months ago. Drilling will resume with casing planned around 3725 feet. The site has drawn major oil company interest as Humble Oil and Refining contemplates a new location nearby in extreme southwest Pecos County. A 1000-foot test is planned on the Emmett Ricks ranch north of Fort Davis, now owned by Mrs. EM Her of Mrs RC Wiley, with move-in of materials imminent. Green Valley’s G H Storey test near Alpine is being cleaned for redrilling after a gas and oil showing at 1870 feet.

Border Patrol Employee Dies at Home in Alpine
An Alpine Border Patrol employee died Sunday morning at his home after a short illness attributed to typhoid fever. Louis Broyles, employed since 1926, arrived in Alpine when the sub district headquarters moved there last August. He is survived by his widow and three children. Funeral services were held in the afternoon, attended by nearly all Border Patrol members in the sub district, plus Alpine Masonic lodge and Legion post members.
