Funeral services for Mrs P C Ratcliff were held Sunday at 3 p m at First Baptist church. She died at her Slaton home after months of illness. Survivors include her husband, her mother Mrs J R Morton of Alpine now in Abilene, and a brother W A Morton of Alpine. Rev Glenn W Bates and Rev Le Roy Sewell officiated. Interment followed at Elm Grove cemetery.
Staff Sergeant Richard Slight arrived Monday to spend Christmas with his parents Mr and Mrs Bernal Slight and other relatives before reporting to Lackland Air Force Base San Antonio for Officer Candidate School. A Sul Ross College graduate Slight volunteered for service Aug 15 1950 and after basic training was sent to Scott Air Force Base Ill, then transferred a month ago to Parks AFB near San Francisco where he was promoted to staff sergeant just before leaving.
William C. Wright, 36, a U S Border Patrol veteran of 14 years, died last Friday at his Sanderson home after a heart attack. A World War II veteran, he lived in Alpine during the sector office era and later from the Marta office, renowned as a top pistol shot in patrol competitions. Funeral services were held at the Sanderson Baptist church, with the body later taken to Roswell, New Mexico, for military rites.
The Alpine post will remain open all day Saturday this week and next week to serve patrons during the Christmas mailing season. Mrs Annie K Turney, postmaster, announced this week.
A Sul Ross College assembly for Congressman Kenna drew 65 to 70 residents who opposed a city livestock ordinance. Mayor John Gillett outlined complaints about sanitation and open toilets while proposing a veterinary inspection plan. The crowd voted against the livestock law and supported appointing a five member committee to study sanitary conditions.
June Koch, graduate of Alpine High School and daughter of Peter and Mrs Koch, is introduced as the new weekly park correspondent for The Avalanche. Her first column appears this week, inviting park residents to share news.

Alpine announces a new parking meter system to start Monday at 8 am with 183 two hour meters placed along West Ave E from Sixth to Seventh streets and parts of North Fourth Street. Warnings will be given as motorists adjust, with liberal spaces and parallel parking to ease backing in.
John Colwell, former Fort Davis employee and Safeway staffer, becomes Alpine Safeway manager, reportedly the youngest in the system at 22. He previously served as assistant manager in Carlsbad New Mexico and has returned to Alpine with wife and son John Perry I. Mr Courtney, former local manager, moved to Odessa with his family.
Woods Oil and Gas Co. Mary Decie No. 1, drilling northwest of Marathon, reached 5702 feet at noon Wednesday. C. W. Tassinger reports the drill out of chert into hard black sand with no discouraging findings, expected to reach Marathon lime between 6000 and 6500 feet. Geologists remain encouraged.
Rep. Ken Regan told about 170 people at Sul Ross College and at a local service club meeting that excessive foreign aid and subsidies burden taxpayers. He warned voters to demand government economy, cautioned against overgrown programs like Soil Conservation, and urged citizens to vote to curb bureaucrats while citing past procurement errors and savings from cutting unneeded stock orders.
Mrs Virgil Young and her young son Stephen departed this week for Seattle Washington for a brief stay with her husband's sister and family Lt and Mrs John Wardlow.
Marfa soil conservationist H L Leithead was named chairman of the Texas section of the American Society of Range Management at the annual San Antonio meeting. Roger Q Landers of Menard became vice chairman with Leo B Merrill of Sonora Experiment Station as secretary treasurer. Over 100 ranchers and conservationists attended as Fred G Renner of the Washington SCS spoke. Dave Foster of Uvalde was named president.
Dr. and Mrs. Frank P. Mathews of Santa Maria, longtime Alpine residents, sustained injuries in a December night auto accident near Nipomo. Dr. Mathews endured a dislocated hip and shock, Mrs. Mathews suffered a broken left arm and facial lacerations. Their conditions were reported satisfactory. Dr. Mathews had previously overseen local experimental work and now runs a veterinary hospital in Santa Maria.
Dr Dorothy Bail ys literature class at Sul Ross college will host four story hours at the Alpine Public Library during Christmas. Children of all ages invited from 4 to 5 pm December 17 18 19 and 20 to hear Christmas stories songs and carols. Sul Ross students Maurine Ross Doris Steadman June Prather Jo Ann Rosemary McCain Dolores McCright and Mary Nell Hise participate in this community project before sailing for Japan December 19. They will join 1st Lt Virgil Young stationed in Japan for almost two years and have a home ready near Tokyo. Mrs Young is daughter of Mr and Mrs Stephenson and Lt Young is son of Mrs Noel.
