A December column marks the Pearl Harbor anniversary and warns against internal threats to liberty. It contends democracy must stay active as Alpha Chi announces a tree lighting at Sul Ross on Tuesday December 11 at 6 PM with public invitation.
The 1981 Big Bend Junior Football conference held a barbecue at the Alpine American Legion hall for 175 boys and 20 schoolmen and dads after their race. Trophies were awarded to Alpine Centennial midgets and Van Horn for co champions, with traveling trophies requiring three consecutive wins. Community leaders and coaches from Alpine Central, Alpine Centennial, Van Horn, Marfa, and Marfa High attended the event, continuing the league tradition.
A Friday afternoon bicycle safety clinic kickoff at Centennial on the west campus featured 20 faculty members led by Principal G G Lafarelle. Events for boys and girls included balance, barrel, serpentine, and distance races with prizes donated by the PTA. About 400 children and 200 parents attended between 3 and 4 30 p m.

Twelve-man team chosen by head coaches includes four from East Texas State, three from Sam Houston, and two from Southwest Texas State. Second team features Bob Pauley Sul Ross and Darrell Hortness Southwest Texas, with multiple players from Lamar Tech and Stephen F. Austin. Honorable mentions list Ends, Tackles, Guards, Center, and Backs from East Texas, Southwest, Sul Ross, and Sam Houston.
The piece urges Alpine residents, including a husband of an Alpine girl injured in a war training flight, and Alpine boys headed to Fort Bliss for physicals, to uphold duty in defending the country. It marks ten years since World War II began for the U S and calls for citizens to exercise their voting rights, resist corruption, and honor sacrifices through steadfast civic action as the American Legion Big Bend Post No 79 speaks to preserve the American Way of Life.
Santa Claus rode through a 12 block parade on a pleasant evening drawing a large crowd. The Christmas lights glowed for the first time, and a holiday treasure hunt ran from 5 to 8 PM with windows decorated by local merchants. First prize netted $28 for a perfect score.
November brought only 0.02 inches of moisture in the Big Bend area, with no local precipitation since 1947. Alpine area meters, six months pilot, 190 ordered for Holland avenue to Fourth street and surrounding blocks, 12 minute limit near the post office, meters pay for themselves with limited upkeep, I M Ross Miller to enforce rules, pace by city, project continued on last page.
A public Driver Education clinic at Alpine High School drew over 400 attendees on December 3 and 4 despite strong winds. Sponsored by the local safety council Alpine Study Club El Progreso and Sul Ross Driver Education with Texas Department of Public Safety officers, the event covered Texas Driver License laws and new liability rules effective January 1.
The Highway Department advertises bids for seal-coating about 84 miles of county and state roads in Brewster and nearby areas. Bids open December 12 in Austin. Projects include 200 miles of State Highway 118 from Alpine to Park area and 64 miles of US Highway 90 to the Pecos county line. Work slated for late spring or summer next year. The Central school PTA will honor teachers Tuesday December 11 from 7 to 8 at Central gym with signed rolls and student performances by high school bands from Sul Ross, Marathon, Pecos, Fort Davis, and Alpine. About 500 musicians, drum majors and majorettes attended by a large gathering.
Lt. Robert H. Snure, formerly of Alpine, sustained a coma and multiple injuries after a B29 crash in Denver. He trained at Marfa Army airfield and served in World War II, with parents in Spokane and wife Sammie Dorris of Alpine at his bedside.
November permits in Alpine reached 6750 to bring the 1951 city total to 271450. No October permits and only 5600 in April.
