Texas State Parks board and the Texas Big Bend Park association press ahead with acquiring and developing a vast Big Bend national park despite wartime. Plans include a 788,000 acre tract valued at about 1.48 million dollars, with title delivery to the Federal government and potential international park linkages. Morelock Peak may be named for Morelock, and a Mexican-side tract is eyed to expand the project, signaling strong bipartisan support amid national crisis. The Baptist church choir directed by Mrs. Jack will present the Christmas cantata Chimes of the Holy Night on Sunday evening at 7 30. Composed by Fred B. Holton the cantata centers on the Christmas Story as told by prophet and evangelist. It features thirteen numbers with men and women soloists and full choir. Mrs. Frank Young is the soloist. The public is invited to attend at the church.
The Ft. Davis Women's chorus the junior choir and the Marta Choral club with guest soloists will present a program of Christmas music at the Presbyterian church in Fort Davis next Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The Everett organ will be dedicated at that time. The public is invited to attend.
Incendiary bombs of various types were displayed by State Fire Chief Frank Williams in a city hall gathering for firemen and citizens. He described how these bombs start fires hard to extinguish, urged preparedness, and warned water can worsen some blazes.
The Big Bend Medical Society and Auxiliary will meet in Alpine Monday evening December 15 with Alpine doctors as hosts. A dinner will be served at 6 30. A program in the form of a symposium on gall bladder diseases will be presented.
The Avalanche announces an earlier Dec 26 issue to observe the holiday weekend. Paper will be delivered to the post office late Wednesday and advertisers and correspondents are urged to submit copy accordingly.
The FFA boys host a turkey shoot tomorrow December 13 at the rifle range on Marathon road. Prizes of turkeys go to top scores in each contest with groups of five or ten shooters. Shooters supply their own guns and ammo. the event offers sandwiches, coffee, candy, and drinks. Proceeds help send FFA judging teams to spring contests. Everyone is invited.
A new five room frame residence for J C Henderson is under construction on the W T Henderson and Sons ranch north of Alpine. Remodeling and improvements to other buildings at the ranch headquarters are also in progress.
John R. Sanford prominent Eagle Pass attorney and former district attorney, died in a San Antonio hospital after a monthlong illness at age 75. He served two terms as district attorney around the turn of the century and later sat in the state legislature representing Eagle Pass. Survived by his widow and children Henry, Elizabeth, Susan, and siblings, with funeral held in Eagle Pass yesterday.
Fort Davis records reveal Quanah Parker and two aides stayed at Hotel Lempert on December 13 1884 while seeking peyote a sacred herb. The 1913 Fort Davis Weekly Post list includes Parker Rising Sun and Nan Notes among guests. The herb peyote linked to visions and the Aztec tradition. its range spans from the Davis Mountains to the Gulf coast.
Slow rain in the Hiland area totals .61 inches, first moisture since October. Rain covers a wide Big Bend-Davis mountains section, with varying intensity. November rainfall was light, while 1941 year-to-date totals stand at 31.18 inches. Ranchmen note benefits for early weeds as moderate temperatures continue.
Pastor Ray B. McGrew of the Methodist church will speak at the Parent-Teacher Association meeting next Monday afternoon at 3 20 o clock in the high school. His topic is The Responsibility of Home Development The Home the School the Community. The fourth grade will present the program and a large turnout of parents and interested parties is urged.
Fort Davis reports completion of the 9 mile Davis Mountains State Park road segment carried out by Holland Page. The highway department accepted the work, begun in spring, and the route now extends past Rockpile wayside park and Sawtooth Mountain. An additional 14 miles are under survey and construction toward the Fort Davis Valentine road near the Kelly ranch of George Jones.
A Christmas music program will be presented at the Christian Church Sunday evening at 7 30. The All Church Orchestra will perform 18 minutes before the regular program opening with The Star Spangled Banner. The program includes solos duets quartets and readings featuring Alice Parkhurst Betsy Burgess Marion Bobo and others with numbers such as Silent Night O Come All Ye Faithful and The Christmas Story Luke 2 1 20. The public is cordially invited to attend.
Alpine and Brewster county residents face planned emergency drills and civilian defense mobilizations as Mayor L B Starns and County Judge R Bight urge cooperation. The notice lists alarm procedures and designated contacts for four blast signals, under wartime preparedness.
