Blacktail Deer Season Among the Best in Big Bend History
Officials from the Big Bend Sportsman Club and Alpine Chamber of Commerce hailed the just ended blacktail deer season as one of the most successful in the Big Bend Davis Mountains region. Deer were plentiful due to good range conditions and many hunters took their prize. Winners included Raye McReynolds of Sierra Blanca with a 106.75 point buck.

Alpine School Board trustees Tuesday night appointed a Board of Equalization but withheld names until acceptances were received. They approved November bills including utilities and band uniforms, authorized an $11,000 note to First National Bank for payroll, adopted a disaster plan for Central gym and cafeteria, arranged heating system repairs and emergency measures, authorized boiler upgrades for emergency use, and instructed Supt. Peyton Cain to prepare affidavits on long-distance student transportation.

Dr Ponton Named City Health Officer In Alpine
Dr Arvel R Ponton was appointed city health officer by the City Commission on Monday night, succeeding Dr J E Wright who resigned with gratitude for service to Alpine. The city will buy 43.20 dollars of tetanus vaccine for indigent patients as it is not available from the State Health Dept. Other actions included meter enforcement, private ditch digging charges, disposal of an old truck, utility disconnections to save charges, and free water and sewer for officials. Plans for beautification projects in Kokernot Lodge and Chamber of Commerce areas were discussed with mayor and commission backing. A tree and shrub planting program was urged with invocation by Rev Richard of Our Lady of Peace.

C A Fishel former Alpine resident died in Pecos Monday of a heart attack. Funeral services were held there yesterday. Pallbearers included Frank McCollum of Alpine. He lived in Alpine from 1928 to 1944 and is survived by his wife a daughter and two sons James Pecos and Bill New Jersey.

Morriss Charolais cattle show rapid gains in Alpine feedings
A 10 month old Charolais bull calf owned by Mr and Mrs Gilmer Morriss weighed 1170 pounds on Dec 3 with an average daily gain of 4 pounds over 47 days under A J Bierschwab s supervision. A year old bull weighed 1860 pounds on Oct 16 and 2190 pounds on Dec 3 for a 7 pound daily gain. Three other groups including 100 crossbred Charolais heifers shipped to Puerto Rico and 100 crossbred bulls sold in Phoenix had notable gains or weight ranges. Bierschwab, former Range Animal Husbandry head at Sul Ross, oversees the feeding. Morriss is president of the American International Charolais Association and operates ranches at Rocksprings and Alpine.
