Deer season in the Big Bend runs through Monday December 8 as hunters report fat deer, 100 to over 200 pounds. J Dean Jr leads the Big Bend Sportsman club Alpine Chamber of Commerce contest with an 8 point buck at 102.25 points weighing 140 pounds. Heaviest so far is 190 pounds by C B Woodward Jr of Uvalde. Clarence D Bennett and John Roberts brought in 182 and 189 pound deer respectively. Hal Swiggett of the San Antonio Express joined Neville Haynes on the Nevill Ranch.

Carl Rusk Hurt In Fall While Hunting Near Fort Davis
Carl J. Rusk district construction chief for Southwestern Bell was seriously injured in a 30 foot fall while deer hunting with his brother Lynn north of Fort Davis in the Dude Sproul Ranch. He suffered a crushed chest multiple broken ribs and other injuries but showed steady improvement at Brewster County Memorial Hospital.

Alpine Band to Enter Odessa Marching Contest
Alpine High School band directed by Leland Schultz will enter the International League marching band contest in Odessa on Saturday December 6 in Class AA. Other competitors include Fort Stockton McCamey Crane Seminole Denver City and the Odessa Cadets. Bandsmen will leave Alpine by bus and private cars around 6 am and expected back about 9 pm. Last year Alpine placed fourth in Class A. this is their first contest of the school year.

Alpine Public School to Install New Boiler After 29 Year Old Unit Fails
Alpine officials ordered a new $3000 boiler after the 29 year old American Standard boiler cracked beyond repair. Distillate heaters borrowed at no cost will be used until installation. The replacement could arrive from Denver by train and truck with a possible operation date around December 17 or January 5, 1959 depending on transport. The upgrade includes 3580 radiator feet capacity and a low water cutoff with automatic feed for safety.

Local boy shot by father's rifle in accident
Ten year old Jose Miranda of Oolessa was wounded in the left hand when his father Juan Miranda discharged a rifle last night. The boy was playing with the gun after the father believed all shells were removed. He is in Brewster County Memorial Hospital in good condition.

George Koury 71 former Valerie Shop owner in Alpine died last Friday in St Petersburg Florida after a heart attack. He and his wife came to Alpine in 1988 from San Dies California and opened a women’s dress shop later selling the business and moving to Florida. He belonged to Rotary Lodge Masonry Episcopal and Presbyterian churches and was once with the Eastern Orthodox Church. Born in Syria he once represented Britain to the Sudan and traveled globally for a manufacturer. He leaves a widow a son Rex a hoted organist in Boise and a daughter Valerie who died in 1948.
