Government records from Alpine show a cold drizzle with sleet and wet snow adding about one inch of moisture to the ranges in the first part of the week. The two week total reaches one and a half inches. Snow fell Sunday through Tuesday, with readings of 0.18, 0.60, and 0.22 inches, while much of the moisture soaked into the thirsty ground.
Five year old Dickie Hancock, son of Mr and Mrs Lee Hancock, fell from a windmill tower while at his grandfather F E Gitlet's home Wednesday before noon. He was rushed to a bone specialist in El Paso by train. Initial surface exam showed no broken bones, but full X rays were performed with no early reports. Mr and Mrs John Lett took the child to El Paso for medical care.
C P Kimball & Son shipped three carloads of calves from their Titley ranch near Alpine on the Santa Fe. The heaviest calves weighed about 800 pounds, with loads averaging 526, 475, and 455 pounds respectively. The overall average for the three loads was 486 pounds. The heavy weights are attributed to the dry, routh-stricken West Texas range.
The Masonic Lodge Master Star De Molays and Rainbow Girls plan a Christmas party December 18 at the Fifth Street lodge and club. Masons and families are invited for talks a musical program refreshments bridge dominoes and dancing. A committee coordinates with Eastern Star ladies and Mrs A B Lanaifer reports strong interest.
Eight students earned honor roll status with four or more A's in the Alpine Demonstration. Audrey Lewis led with five A's. David Major was the only boy on the list. The report covers 136 pupils, noting improved grades as the term progresses and detailing pass/fail rates by class, with next reports due after Christmas starting December 19.
A J Hill was selected to captain the Lobos for the 1932 season at a banquet in the Holland hotel. He succeeds Booker Connally and Ivan Newton, co captain, with Newton ineligible yet having played in several games. Twenty six football men attended the event along with coaches faculty and guests.
About 1,000 students in Alpine public schools and Sul Ross College will close for the Christmas holidays starting December 18. Classes resume December 29. Examinations at the college will occur during the week, and all old students are asked to register now to catch up on work. Many students will stay in Alpine while others travel for the ten day break.
The Fort Stockton Panthers outpaced Alpine 37 to 16 as Ray LaBeff fouled out, then Alpine surged briefly to 21–15 before Alpine’s Bill Weyerts led with eight points. Starting for Alpine: Weyerts, Harris, LaBeff, Murray, and Treadwell. Return game set for Wednesday night.
Alpine will have two highway patrolmen stationed here in the future after Austin press reports posted the assignments for 60 new men in training. Joe Fietener and J. N. Thompson joined the service recently. their exact posting date here is not yet known. Ged Anthony, formerly of Alpine, is also linked to the training but a posting location is unclear.
Alpine residents watched a small dirigible advertising a shoe brand pass over the town on a windy Wednesday afternoon. The lighter than air craft moved along railroad tracks through mountain passes at a slow pace, rocking in headwinds. It was described as the first airship of its kind seen by many locals, prompting large crowds to view the spectacle.
B. P. Cara refused to give an address and is held in county jail on a burglary charge after breaking into the wholesale Texaco geoline station south of the 8. P. tracks at 12 30 Monday morning. An officer saw the act and he was picked up in Marathon and brought back to Alpine Monday morning. The car, a Marmon coupe, was allegedly stolen for a Houston man.
Alpine PT A shifts its December 23 gathering to Monday at 3 30 PM in the Junior High school building to accommodate Christmas travel. D M Major school superintendent will lead the session on Teaching Children the Value of Money with a large pre holiday attendance expected.
Alpine tax collector W. O. Hale says license tags for 1932 will be sold as supplies arrive. Passenger cars carry numbers 135001 to 138500. Each car must display two new plates by February 1. Headlight certificates and last year receipts are required for issuance. Alpine will have one official headlight testing station at the Motor in Service station. Rules for duplicates altered after year start.
Sul Ross coach B C Graves and J C Cole left for Dallas to attend the annual TA A conference meeting of coaches and officials. Graves predicts a new conference and rule changes at the session and plans to arrange most basketball games and schedule next year football while meeting coaches in person. Labo cage entry will train nightly in the gym to regain shooting eye during his absence.
Weave a terse report: Atte Waters, daughter of W M Waters of Terlingua, continues to show sight improvement after a serious operation performed here Wednesday. Doctors hold cautious hope as she recovers, aided by her young resilience despite a challenging night.
A Monterey style report notes a Monday chamber of commerce lunch honoring long time Big Bend settlers. Senator BP Berkeley presented a list of pioneers with their Alpine arrivals and birth dates, detailing names, arrival years, and life status, with plans to publish more names later.
Mrs Annie K Turney postmaster urges careful Christmas parcel handling to speed Uncle Sam delivery. She notes parcel post volume rises 200 percent seasonally and recommends clear readable addressing and secure wrapping to prevent breakage. No mail will be released on Christmas Day except special delivery packages.
Alpine scouts were courteous to visiting troops but finished low in the Held meet. Marathon boys won the meet, Presidio second, Alpine troop 41 third, troop 48 absent from top three. Court of honor recognized Hu Seale View parents present. Awards included Ten terfoot badges, second class badges, and Eagle badges for Ira Bowles and Milton Stetson.

Last rites for Graham Barnett former ranger and peace officer shot to death in Rankin were held in Alpine with Rev. Buren Sparks and Rev. J Redman officiating. Interment at Elm Grove cemetery after services at the Methodist church. Barnett, well known for cleaning up dives in the oil boom era, had reportedly clashed with Upton County Sheriff W C Fowler who was released on bond.
The Junior High Tormentors presented Seventeen a four act comedy by Boot Tarkington in the school auditorium Friday night December 4. The audience received the play well and praised the cast. Louise Adele Perkins as Jane Turney Fletcher as Willie Alfred McCutcheon as Joe Bullet stood out for their strong performances and the production staff was complimented for their settings.
The Brewster County Chamber of Commerce will elect officers for the ensuing year at the next regular meeting, with A. F. Robinson stating that more information on leaders will be released next week. Clay Holland of the Hot Anne hotel will chair a nominating committee to prepare a slate for submission, with no candidates hinted at.
