The Brewster County Action Committee led by chairman Dr. Harlan Ford adopts a set of objectives to be pursued with the cooperation of businessmen and other local leaders at a Tuesday Sul Ross College meeting.
Charles E. McDonald joins the law firm of Frank O. Ray as an associate. Effective January 1 1966 a partnership will be formed as Ray and McDonald. McDonald, a Midland-born UT 1953 graduate and grandson of Crockett County judge Charles E. Davidson, plans to move his family to Alpine after the term ends.
Postmaster Billy West announced extended Saturday hours to 5 p.m. on Dec 11 and 18. Parcel post deliveries will occur Tuesday afternoons in December. Local ZIP code 79830 should appear on return addresses and all mail. Updated mailing lists and ZIP checks recommended, and overseas Christmas mail should ship by Dec 10.
House speaker Ben Barnes addressed a capacity Sul Ross College audience on December 7 praising students for pursuing education beyond high school. Sul Ross President Dr. Norman L. McNeil introduced him, with dignitaries including Rep. Gene Hendryx and Mayor Bill Winter among the crowd.
Several hundred students from 22 high schools in the Trans Pecos area are invited to a day-long Nuclear Silence Symposium in West Texas. Sponsored by West Texas Utilities Co and Sul Ross State College, the event features top educators in atomic research physics science engineering and mathematics. Clyde S. Carman presides with welcomes from S.B. Phillips and Dr. Norman L. McNeil. Noted speakers include Dr. Cowan Dr. Hanson Dr. Amstead and Dr. Guy. Attending schools include Alpine Balmorhea Barstow Dell City Fort Davis Fort Hancock Fort Stockton Grandfalls Imperial Iraan Marathon Marfa McCamey Monahans Pecos Presidio Rankin Sanderson Sierra Blanca Toyah Valentine and Van Horn. The program supports the Texas Atomic Energy Research Foundation to study controlled nuclear fusion for peaceful uses. Sul Ross hosts the symposium this year described as a tremendous friend of Sul Ross.
Alpine city leaders announce a 12 900 federal grant for comprehensive urban planning. The funds, plus 6 450 state and local match, will fund studies on economy population traffic land use and zoning with maps and reports guiding Alpine s future growth.
Sul Ross freshman Alton Dodson Brown of Valentine died after the car he rode in overturned on FM 181 between Frankel City and Seminole Monday night. Driver Jerry Martin of Seminole is in critical condition in Andrews hospital. Funeral at Valentine High School 3 p.m. today. Brown is survived by his mother Mrs. C R Short, father W A Slim Brown, brother David Lee Brown, and a sister of San Marcos. Attending Lone Star Conference meeting are Sul Ross AD David Slaughter and coaches Richard Harvey and Frank Krhut among others.
Sul Ross State College dominated the Dallas News All Texas College team with Coach David Slaughter as Coach of the Year and Luz Pedraza as Back of the Year and quarterback on the offense. End Tommy Nelson made the defensive platoon, with honorable mentions for Jim Stapleton Earl Miller Jacob Henry and Alfredo Avila. Pedraza led in total offense and passing in the Lone Star Conference.
Postmaster Billy West announced that Alpine will adopt a single five digit ZIP code 79830 effective January 15 to simplify the system. Alpine joins 643 cities merging multiple codes. old AP codes may still be used until supplies run out. Individual notices will be sent to every postal customer to inform them of the change.
