Marathon and Hovey Roads to Receive Seal Coats

County Judge Felix Mec Gaughy announced a $12 000 contract for seal coat jobs on two county roads. The routes from Marathon to the county park and from U S Highway 67 to Hovey will be improved, each about miles long.

Alpine Public Schools plan a Tuesday open for September 1 enrollment near 1000 students across Alpine Central 340 Alpine Centennial 450 and Alpine High 210. Faculty totals 52 with multi grade rooms and named teachers for grades 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 and administrative roles.

Brewster County Maintains 72c Tax Rate for 1957

Brewster County keeps the 72 cent per hundred valuation tax rate for 1957, unchanged from last year. The Commissioners Court approved a $242,240 budget with similar receipts, based on 90 percent collections. The levy allocates funds to jury, road and bridge, maintenance, special road tax, general, library, and permanent improvements, with 17 cents of the tax supporting the $220,000 hospital bond. Hospital bonds were issued, deposited, and are serviced as county payments flow through Austin and the Federal Government funding half payments.

Most Alpine businesses will close Monday for the Labor Day observance. Alpine Public Schools reopen Tuesday for the fall term and merchants anticipate a large crowd of back to school shoppers on Friday and Saturday.

Well Water Usage Steady as Terry Well Declines

The Terry well has drawn down but is pumped 6 to 8 hours daily at 185 GPM. City Commission says this supplies enough supplemental water for current demand and forecasts no rationing this summer. Normal operations continue at the Daugherty well and citizens are urged to maintain normal usage.

Geologist Nye Leaves Alpine for Berkeley for UC Study

Tommy Nye, geologist for the Atomic Energy Commission, left Alpine for Berkeley to attend the University of California. He traveled with Mrs. Nye and their young son, stopping in Albuquerque where he finalized reports on Trans-Pecos projects since December. the Albuquerque AEC office will release the report later.
