Bucks begin NBC tourney play as 1956 football season opens with coaches Curtis Kelley and Pete Bromley set to run police drills for about 40 Buck candidates on Monday morning August 27.
Alpine area notes include ties to Fort Davis and Harvard College observatory near Prude Ranch with local figures Pete Bishop and Blackie Blackburn mentioned. Also covered are football prospects for Alpine Buckinghams with a 7A schedule including Uvalde, Eagle Pass, Fort Stockton, Pecos, Van Horn, Maria, Iraan, Sanderson, Big Lake Fabens, Marfa, and Sander son.
Alpine Cowboys beat Casa Grande 4 2 after a late rally with Mallett and Newton driving in crucial runs. Sanford started for Alpine but lasted one inning due to a sore arm. Toby Newton relieved and earned the win as Alpine improved to two straight victories and prepared for the feature game at 8 pm broadcast by KVLF with Marvin Kay.
Alpine hosts a dance at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the ATU Hall with Louis Rodriguez orchestra. Tickets are 1.50 a couple or 50 cents for spectators. A Sunday barbecue at the unfinished school building starts at 11:00 a.m. Tickets cost 1 each and menu includes beef beans chili macho vegetables and salads. Parish leaders say more funds are needed to finish the new school.
Construction on the Brewster County Hospital proceeds with concrete foundations poured. Elmer Devenport and Don Duncan supervise Faulkner Construction Co with Bob Burgoss overseeing site work. Meanwhile the Holman home on the Loop Road is occupied with 3900 square feet, and a new house for Mr and Mrs Gene Hillger has begun at 802 N Walker St built by John Richard Whiteside.
Funeral services were held at 3 pm Monday in the First Christian Church for John Holland Blevins 60 pioneer Alpinean who died suddenly Saturday in Goldsmith Texas. He is survived by his widow, a son Capt. John William Blevins U S Air Force in Tampa and a daughter Mrs Gary Carle of Midland, his mother Mrs W S Blevins of Alpine. Burial was in Elm Grove Cemetery with Livingston Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were local Alpine men and several from Goldsmith. Out of town relatives attended from Ozona Goldsmith and Midland.
Dick Rogers president of the First National Bank purchased two non area subscriptions to Soil and Water Texas conservation magazine. The August issue features Joe T Lane of Alpine and a Highland Hereford Breeders Association award. Mrs John C Epperson went to Kerrville to be with her ill son Woodrow and returned.
Big Bend National Park will mark the National Park Service anniversary this Saturday August 25. Park Naturalist Harold J Brodrick will give a slide talk on the service history and policy goals with a focus on Mission 66 and the development of park protections. The event honors Founder's Day and invites all visitors.
A new archery club formed here aims to attract visitors to its events. The club seeks to promote interest in archery and provide training, equipment access, and weekly shoots for members and guests.
Pvt Lewis B Gordon has arrived in Germany and serves with the Rhine Engineer Depot. He is assigned to the depot's 693d Engineer Company and entered the Army in April 1955 after completing basic training at Fort Ord California. He is the son of Mrs Ruth Gordon of 510 South 11th Street Alpine.
The 6th annual Summer Band Clinic opens at Sul Ross State College and runs through August 30 drawing bands from Alpine Crystal City Eagle Pass Lake View San Angelo Laredo McCamey and Uvalde. About 450 students expected. A free concert on August 29 on Jackson Field features William from the University of Michigan Band. Explorer Scouts, 300 strong, attend the Citizens Now conference August 31 to September 2 and stay in dorms. fall registration begins September 11.
United States Army Reservists in the Marfa Alpine unit received praise from Lt. Col. Ben T. Baird for perfect attendance in March April and May. The group includes soldiers from Alpine and Marfa such as Robert Salgado Robert Ceniceros Joe Martinez Dolores Campos Raul Cruz Celeo Gallego James Thomas J B Ramos Angel Bermudez Manuel Prieto Jo Cano Lionel Martinez Ramon Quintani Fernando Hernandez and Juan Lara.
Three Alpine educators earned degrees at Sul Ross State University during Sunday night graduation in Sul Ross auditorium. Letty Jean Akin received a ME, Curtis Kelley earned a ME, and Fern Young earned a BA.
Voters in Brewster County may begin casting ballots at 8 a.m. Saturday August 25 for the second Democratic primary. Polls close at 7 p.m. The governor race between Price Daniel and Ralph Yarborough and the attorney general contest between Will Wilson and Tom Moore are the only statewide battles here. Precincts 1 East and 1 West vote at the Courthouse. other sites include Centennial School Alpine Marathon Community Center Terlingua School and Big Bend National Park School.
The Fort Davis team clinched both halves of the season with no playoff needed. In final games on Thursday, August 16, Morrison downed M System 10 7 and Fort Davis beat Bakers 2 0.
