Redwood family arrives with wife and nine year old son Johnnie to open an auto repair shop in Polk Hinton building beside CP&L. Mr Redwood recently discharged from the Navy after two years service and previously ran an auto shop in George West for 16 years. Mrs Tedwood worked at the draft board office and in George West news.
The new wool and mohair storage facility, owned by John Williams of Sanderson, is a hollow tile building 108 by 265 feet with a corrugated asbestos roof and concrete floor. It has a capacity of about two and a half million pounds and has already received around 900,000 pounds of wool since completion in June. Williams also runs Sanderson Wool Commission Co. at Sanderson, with Press Nichols as Alpines manager. The firm sells ranch supplies and feeds and handles an average of five and a half million pounds of wool and mohair annually at its Sanderson House.

Fort Davis and the Highland area mourn the death of Richard Knight Merrill age 48. He died Monday in a Dallas hospital after weeks of illness, having been at Pecos hospital earlier. Merrill was born August 8 1897 in Marta to Jesse W Merrill and a prominent ranching family. He and his father ran J. W. Merrill & Son and were longtime ranch operators in Fort Davis Marfa area. He married Willie Gray of Weatherford in 1927. He helped build a home near the Limpia canyon ranch eight miles from Fort Davis and remained there. A Presbyterian, he was active in the Masonic fraternity serving as past master. He served in the Texas State Guard.
Louie Granger son of Mrs John Grove Alpine was given an honorable discharge after entering the army February 24 1941. He served in the Italian Southern France Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns and earned the Good Conduct medal and the EAME campaign medal with five bronze stars. Pte Eugenio G Salas of Marathon received the Bronze Arrowhead for his ETO ribbon. the 36th Texas division fought in Italy and Southern France on two D Day actions. Allison L Dalton recently returned from Europe with Patton's Third Army on a 30 day furlough to visit his mother Mrs Annie L Dalton and relatives. Pvt Pilar Hernandez discharged after service since November 27 1943. awarded the European-African-Middle East Service medal. Lt Darrell D York transferred from Carlsbad New Mexico to Buckley Colorado AAF for provost marshal's school. Capt John L Sublett RAF pilot, back from a year in the ETO, and Mrs Sublett visiting his parents. Robi Lafarelle, veteran of the Pacific, received an honorable discharge after induction November 20 1940. He served in the Bismarck Archipelago Luzon and New Guinea campaigns and earned the Purple Heart Good Conduct Medal Philippine Liberation ribbon American Defense Service medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Service medal. Capt Wesley C Holcombe after 41 months in Australia returned to the states and visits his mother Mrs Nora Yates. He is stationed at Fairfield California with the Army Allied air corps flying C 54 planes. His bride Miss Joyce Quick remains at her Melbourne home.
Brewster county voters rejected the constitutional amendment raising legislators pay by 102 to 48 while approving three other amendments. North Alpine reported 104 valid ballots, with 16 in South Alpine No. 2, eight in Terlingua No. 3, and 22 in Marathon No. 4.
The Car Parts Depot moves this weekend from West Main Avenue to the building beside the Western Union office on North Fifth Street. Renovations add fixtures for increased stock. The store closes tomorrow and Monday and reopens at the new location next Tuesday morning.
J. A. Batey, former Church of Christ minister here, who underwent a major operation in a Nashville hospital July 12, is reported to be making satisfactory recovery and was moved to his home recently. Miss Irma Lee Batey, head of Sul Ross music department, was here last week on business and has a year's leave of absence.
Mrs. Ollie V. Nettleton, 73, former Alpine resident, died at her San Angelo home last Thursday. Funeral services were Sunday at 2:30 pm in San Angelo with burial in the San Angelo cemetery. Survived by three sons John Smith, C. F. Smith, and Oran Deming. The Alpine Yanks Latin America ball team and Angelo Deming figure in local sports notes.
The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff in the case of W. D. Mc Call individually and as next friend of Earl Neal McCall, minor, versus Alpine Telephone Co. Damages were awarded 32,000 to Earl McCall and 10,000 to W. D. McCall. Trial began Tuesday of last week with special issues submitted Saturday noon. jurors excused for term and court recessed.
Local rains and showers were reported in the Big Bend and Davis mountains area the past week with Alpine receiving .21 inches. A good rain fell west of town Tuesday totaling .19 inches with a second rain later that did not reach the east part of town. Maximum temperature of the week was 87 on Wednesday and minimum 58 last Thursday.
S. P. James opens a new evening grocery in the Isbell property east of the Central Ward school tomorrow. Mr James and his family arrived about two months ago from Mason and purchased the Mrs. M. R. Fuller residence on North Second St.

Marfa chamber of commerce sponsors a three day rodeo to be staged Saturday Sunday and Monday with a parade at 5 p.m. tomorrow and a night show at 8 30 p.m. Sunday and Monday performances follow at 2 48 p.m. each day. High class talent is promised and local residents are urged to attend. Marfa business houses will close Monday at noon for Labor Day observance.
