The September Western Horseman notes Sul Ross State College in Alpine Texas claiming 1962 national NIBA championships in both girls and boys divisions. Calf roping and ribbon roping champion Billy James led the six man team with 440 and 515 points, Donna Jean Saul won goat tying with 689.5 points, while Sam Houston’s team contended.

Regents Approve College Budgets for 1963 64
The Board of Regents approved a budget of 1 251 765 for Sul Ross State College for 1963 64 up 5 percent from 1962 63. The 1964 65 figure was set at 1 212 364. Budgets for all six colleges were approved and will be submitted to the 58th Legislature in January 1963. New regent J A Huffines Frey of Greenville joined the board in Alpine to fill the late Frank E White's unexpired term.

Mourning Dove Season Opens in North Texas September First
Mourning dove season starts Saturday September 1 and runs through October 30 for the north zone including the Big Bend Davis Mountains area. A 2 day white winged dove season occurs in Brewster County on September 7 and 9 with bag limits 12 mourning doves and 24 possession total. white wings limited to 10 with 20 in possession. Shotguns capped at three shells and 10 gauge max. rifles banned. Shooting hours 12 noon to sunset for mourning doves, 2 p.m. to sunset Sept 7 and 9 for white wings. No hunting in Big Bend National Park.

Mittie English Dies at Kenedy with Alpine Roots
Miss Mittie English died August 25 in her Kenedy home after a life spanning Alpine and Davis Mountains ranching. Graveside services were held August 27 at Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine. Survived by four sisters Ade English Lenora English Mallie Thames and Sophia Allen. Services conducted by Rev Clyde Chesnutt. Pallbearers named. Out-of-town relatives listed.

Miss Sanchez Elected Queen at Alpine Athletic Club Dance
Mary Ann Sanchez elected baseball queen by the Alpine International Athletic Baseball Club. A 1962 Alpine High graduate, she won Saturday night at Central Ward gym with runners up Juanita Mancinez Elisa Espinoza and Conchita Xelgon a. The queen will be crowned Sept 15 at a dance. The local team canceled a Sunday game vs the Big Spring Tigers after they failed to appear. The Ints will travel to Lamesa Sunday to face the Red Sox. Alpine 7th and 8th graders will receive uniforms at 9 am Saturday Sept 1 in front of Central Gym.

County Sets 80 Cent Tax Rate
Brewster County Commission approved a budget of 252000 with a tax rate of 80 cents per 100 valuation at the annual budget hearing held last Thursday. The rate has stood at 80 cents for years with allocations of 52 cents to the general fund 6 cents to the library 20 cents for permanent improvements 2 cents to the jury fund 15 cents of the permanent fund retiring hospital bonds and 5 cents for county building maintenance. Total valuation about 13000000.

Heavy Rains Drench Alpine Area Friday
The Alpine region received 1.18 inches of rain late Friday evening, with compact coverage within 15 miles of Alpine. Readings ranged from 0.5 inches in North Alpine to over 2 inches in the south, amid a severe storm and strong winds that damaged downtown windows and felled tree limbs. An earlier shower added 0.27 inches. August totals stand at 1.70 inches, well below the monthly average.

Boundary realignment for Brewster County Precincts 3 and 4 approved
Commissioners Court approved adjusting the boundary between Precincts 3 and 4 in Brewster County. Land nearer Precinct 3 moved into that precinct and land nearer Precinct 4 moved into the other. Tom Yarbro chairs Precinct 3 and Rex Ivey Jr. heads Precinct 4. Alpine Public Schools will operate a single central cafeteria serving all students. The move aims to cut building and food costs.
