Rains Bring Beneficial Moisture to Davis Mountains Area
Beneficial rains covered the Da vis mountains and Big Bend region over the past week, with moisture ranging from grass rains to heavy downpours. Creeks and arroyos in southern areas caused minor travel delays due to high waters. Alpine saw the first significant moisture since May, adding to a yearly total of 18.87 inches at Sul Ross College, with June recording 5.71 inches. A light shower occurred yesterday around noon and more moisture was noted in the afternoon.

Supper Apple Weighs 19 Ounces in Port Davis
In Port Davis on August 27 Lee Sproul weighed a Delicious apple at 19 ounces, an unusually large fruit on display at the local bank. Mrs. E H Carlton brought in a pear for size comparison, while Ben Morriss notes a hoped crop of 20 000 bushels this year. Innovative handling includes tree to wholesaler sales and packing in bushel baskets. Apples fetch 50 cents to 2 50 a bushel as the season progresses.

Clay Holland and Gay Meri of Alpine purchase the Mahon ranch spanning Brewster and Presidio counties. The 32000 acre property with 15000 acres leased lies in the Solitario area of the Big Bend country and was long operated by Pearl Jackson. New owners plan fencing, wells, tanks, pipes and probable sheep stocking to water the range.

Beer Parlor Raids Hit Alpine. Three Fines Levied
State Liquor Control Board and Texas Rangers raided Alpine beer parlors last Saturday night. Buckhorn cafe fined 25 dollars plus costs for selling beer without a license. Roman's cafe license surrendered and fined 25 dollars plus costs for selling beer to intoxicated persons. Toltec cafe fined 25 dollars with license suspended 18 days for similar charge. Eleven arrested, seven pled guilty and paid 14 dollars each in fines.

Ranchmen Hunt Killer She Wolf Near Valentine
Fort Davis August 27. Thirty men and 15 dogs failed to kill the old she wolf blamed for months of depredations in Jeff Davis county west of Valentine on Earnest Barnett’s leasehold ranch. Barnett rode with the chase until his horse fell. the wolf escaped. Riders and teams covered eight to ten miles. an airplane may be used to pursue or drive her out before grazing sheep on nearby lands.

AUSTIN August 22 The State Parks board named secretary Frank Quinn acting administrator in charge of plans to acquire rugged West Texas terrain for what may become Big Bend National Park The board also named E EK Townsend as assistant administrator and advisor on land for the project Abortions? No Basin. The group met with State Land Commissioner Bascom Giles whose department holds title to 300000 to 400000 acres of school land in the park area The headquarter plans set for September 1 in Alpine and the group discussed a 1500000 appropriation approved by the legislature to aid the purchase with attorney general Gerald C Mann and Fred Isley present The conference included Rep A H King of Throckmorton and others The Big Bend Park association representatives joined the talks and a site for offices was arranged in the Hord building with Alpine offices to open September 2.

Dr. Marvin L Majors, formerly Mt Colorado City, will open an optometry office in Alpine next Monday in the Turner building with J W Sheppert Leweler. He has years of experience under his father who runs a jewelry business and optometry shop in Colorado City and holds a degree from Philadelphia Optical College. Fire Damages Copeland Package on North Fifth Street
