Capt John Bubba Young III resigns from the Army Air Force effective August 12 and will enter business in Fort Worth. He is a World War II veteran who served four years since the war, including 18 months at Savannah Georgia and Norfolk Virginia. Also, Merle Waters and Paul Hilbrich were chosen to represent Sul Ross Baptist Student Union in the Baptist Training Union choir touring with about 20 concerts.

Pecos Span Open Restores Traffic On U S 90 After Flood
The Pecos River low water bridge is completed and U S Highway 90 traffic resumes. The new 240 foot bridge, 20 feet wide, sits with the same gradient as pre flood approaches and a U turn on the west bank. Approaches will be surfaced soon and a 1500 foot detour four miles east remains in use for about three weeks until Seminole canyon bridge work continues.

First Tourist Car Comes Through Alpine Welcomed on Arrival
The first out of state visitors to cross the Pecos river bridge after its opening were given a royal Alpine welcome. Mr and Mrs W J Landry and two children of New Orleans received $67 in cash from Alpine merchants and the Alpine TSSA. Mayor Hugh White led a town tour visiting Sul Ross College and Kokernot Field. The event marked the resumed through traffic on U S Highway 90 aiding Alpine's economy.

Rev Francisco Gaytan becomes pastor of the Alpine Mexican Methodist church after serving two years at Van Horn. He studied at Texas Western College and Lydia Patterson Institute in El Paso. In Brewster county the runoff for Precinct 1 commissioner drew a record absentee vote totaling 108 from North Alpine Precincts 1 East and 1 West. The county total reached 136 as votes from Marathon Precinct 3 and South Alpine Precinct 2 added 28 ballots. The race pits M. Smith against Jimmy Pate, with incumbent Smith having led in the first primary. Lions Club Organized in Big Bend Park
A Lions club formed in Big Bend National Park with 18 initial members and 7 to 8 more expected by the final date Sept 14. County Commissioner Rex Ivey and Alpine district governor Marvin Kay oversee, with Chas Blakey as treasurer and secretary. The group meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays and includes members from Marathon NPS and park concessions.
