Scott LeMeilleur Jr. has taken over the Alpine cafe in Big Lake this week after buying the business. He has four years of Big Lake cafe experience and recently sold City Gafe. The Cox and Bart families operated the cafe since last November. the Coxes will stay, the Barts return to California for business, and LeMeilleur’s family will join him once housing is secured.

The American Legion Auxiliary Big Bend Post No. 79 launches its 1949 membership drive led by Mrs. Dorss Fulcher. Wives mothers sisters and daughters of Legion members or war service dead and women who served in either world war are invited to join. Fulcher will reach out to interested parties who call her at phone 72. Plan includes that Sunny Day and buying U S Savings Bonds.
Visitors at Big Bend National Park in the Chisos mountains report sleeping under blankets amid high summer heat. Supt Maxwell notes a 143 percent rise in cabin bookings through July versus last year while deer and antelope increase park photography. Geology talks at campfires draw crowds as park staff plan ahead for another record attendance. Road work continues on the Persimmon Gap to park HQ route and oiling soon to begin on other park roads.
The 59th annual Bloys Camp Meeting at Skillman Grove near Fort Davis ended in a strong turnout. Sunday services highlighted the week with 613 in Sunday school and $291.50 collected for four denominational orphanages. Speakers included Rev Leland Clegg and Rev Jeff Ray with music by John Prude and Mrs Tyrone Kelly.
A mass meeting of city water users is set by the city commission for Monday August 30 at 7 30 p m in the courthouse. The gathering aims to review the water situation in Alpine and urges attendance from all water users.
"Red River" the Western classic praised as a top picture since Cimarron and Covered Wagon will show at the Granada theater September 5 6 and 7. The film depicts the Chisholm Trail and is adapted from Borden Chase's Saturday Evening Post serial.
The Junior Cowboys will play their last game of the season at Kokernot Field Sunday at 3 p.m. against Grandfalls with 25 cent general admission and 50 cent grand stand seats. Efforts are underway to arrange Senior Cowboys games for next weekend and Ligon's All-Stars may visit September 5-6 if arranged.
C M Red Sparks resigns as manager of Radford Grocery Co to join San Antonio Wholesale Grocery Co after nine years with Radford. Ray Berry of San Angelo is named successor and is expected to arrive tomorrow.
Austin reports the 1948 selective service initial registration will span 17 working days from August 30 to September 18. Men 18 to 25 register at local boards with dates by birth year and 18th birthday rules. Local hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Brewster and Jeff Davis counties.
Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church in Marathon for James William Green born July 13 1868 in Basque County Texas. He married Mary Madra Compton in 1891 and had 11 children. Interment followed at Marathon cemetery with Livingston Funeral Home in charge.
Jug Harris of Big Bend Baseball led the Leans against the Fat squad sponsored by Pilot Club last Sunday. Lawrence George pitched and J O Casparis caught for the Fats as they held the Leans hitless for five innings before two infield hits finally produced runs. Old-timer H R Gard at 76 stood out for the Leans with a solid second-base putout and brief at bat.
Sul Ross campus hosts Region 9 Scout Executive Training with more than 350 professionals and families, drawing from Oklahoma New Mexico and Texas. Conference opens with convocation and speeches, then discussions on tools priorities and recruiting, plus nightly activities and a barbecue for national and regional representatives.
