Mining suit over boy's death reaches payout

Ancient Indian relics found in Davis Mountains near Fort Davis
West Texas anthropologists led by Victor J. Smith of Sul Ross College unearthed a fiber bag from a shelter cave in the Davis Mountains near Fort Davis. The bag, eight inches by nine inches, held two chalky rock fragments, a hatchet blade with shaft, seven flint knife blades, and eight scrapers. The team also documented pictographs on cave walls.

P H Stack of Los Angeles was seriously injured Monday night in an auto accident about 10 miles west of Alpine as he traveled with his wife and child to visit his brother Witt Stack. The car collided with a truck near Paisano, causing the vehicle to be almost completely wrecked. Mrs Stack and the child escaped serious injury. Regents Meeting Approves Summer Programs at Sul Ross
The quarterly meeting of state teachers colleges presidents and regents was held at Sul Ross college. Gil Ross was authorized to offer graduate work in summer 1996 in education science English Spanish and social science. Xavier Gonzalez was hired to conduct the art colony for 1996 and to establish a permanent arrangement. The campus improvement plan authorized completion of the cottage program with support from local groups to raise $700 for student housing.

Grierson Attorney Seeks Second Habeas Corpus Writ
Fort Davis August 21. W Van Sickle Alpine attorney filed for a second writ of habeas corpus on behalf of George M Grierson who a jury recently ruled to be of unsound mind. Grierson was brought from an asylum under a prior writ alleging legal restraint. A like request was made for the second writ. Hearing date not yet set.

Nugget Found in Davis Mountains Anyone Could Find
In the Davis Mountains near Alpine a gold nugget weighing 22 carats was found inside a chicken after a hen was killed and dressed by Mrs. Ed Davidson. Frank Davidson showed the nugget, suggesting it may have washed down from a canyon behind the Davidson home on the Kokernot ranch.

Seven WPA projects submitted at county planning board meeting
The Brewster County WPA planning board adopted resolutions favoring seven projects in Alpine and Marathon. Plans from sponsors will be drawn up and sent to J Paul Henderson in El Paso for selection of the most worthwhile, then forwarded to the state office in Dallas. Projects include repairs to Marathon city park clubhouse, Alpine playground and school campus improvements, airport improvements and riverbank rip-rapping, Alpine community house and scenic drive work, Sul Ross science and history building, and Sul Ross campus sidewalks. The meeting, held in Alpine, was attended by Mayor T R Moody, Sul Ross officials, and local club and PTA leaders.

Mrs. W C Burgie, a summer student at Sul Ross college in El Paso, won the $25 prize drawn at Granada theatre Money Night this week. Another $25 drawing will be offered by the theatre next Tuesday night.

Sul Ross artist denies mural charge. removal ordered
Xavier Gonzalez, Sul Ross State Teachers College art instructor, defended his war and peace murals in the city auditorium lobby against charges of communism. Legion post commander Herman G. Nami had protested the works, prompting Mayor K. Quinn to authorize their removal. Nami said one panel showed a beached fist and a palm reaching a cemetery, interpreting them as communistic or capitalist references. Gonzalez called the symbols expressions against war’s bloodshed, not communism. The dispute arose after the American Legion central council objected to the murals two years after they were hung.

Postpone Benefit Show For High School Band
The benefit show for the high school band has been postponed until fall. Instructor Thomas B. Granger said the Granada Theatre will host the event and plans are underway to secure an outstanding film for the occasion. Proceeds will repay money borrowed to help pay for uniforms.
