Alpine public schools to open September 1 with 25 teachers
Alpine public schools will open September 1 with a staff of twenty five experienced teachers. The superintendent announced that the year will begin with general instruction at the Junior high auditorium and students will be guided to their rooms after an hour for book distribution and initial recitations. D.M. Major stated the plans yesterday noting same start date for Madern Ward with changes in key positions.

Army Band Tour Ends in Alpine with Concert and Dance
Fort D. A. Russell soldiers finished a 12 day tour in the Big Bend by performing in Alpine Saturday night. The event included a concert, speeches by local and visiting leaders, and a dance at the courthouse. Temple Pouncey, Alpine's top golf prospect, reaches the Sierra Bianca tournament final on a 36 hole match. He and Davis were tied at 140 after regulation. Davis won on the 37th hole. Cochran placed seventh with 158. Pouncey set a course record with a 32 on a nine hole round.

Suspended term granted in local cow theft case
A district court jury sentenced Jess Gibson to a two year suspended term for cow theft from Sam Nall at Adobe Walls. Several cases were heard with some continued or dismissed. The grand jury, still in session, has refurmed four indictments to date, to be tried next week for theft and burglary plus a marihuana possession case. Andreas Gonzales and Ramon Ramirez were noted for upcoming trials. Roy Priest, the district attorney, and Judge R. Sutton of Marfa were involved in proceedings.

Tremors Sunday morning rocked Alpine and West Texas raising fear and causing structural damage in Valentine and Shatter. Pasqual Luchuga died in a Brewster County mine shaft collapse blamed on the tremor. Houses creaked, clocks stopped, and residents fled as boulders rolled and adobe walls gave way.
