Brewster county Selective Service directs local boards to reopen Class II-A classifications and re classify registrants without regard to III-A eligibility to fill October draft calls. Local Board No. 1 Alpine Texas will call fathers for examination, urging appeals be filed in writing within ten days and offering government provided attorney representation.

Two Negroes Plead Guilty in Sheep Theft Case
Two men identified as Dillard and Clark pleaded guilty in district court this week to sheep theft from the Shely ranch. Dillard received a two year suspended sentence while Clark drew a two year term. The grand jury, led by foreman Oscar Roberts, adjourned the term after returning the indictment. Separate civil actions against Viviana Mining Co. and others were decided in favor of plaintiffs. several cases were dismissed. No petit jury was summoned unless needed. War bonds appeal appears at term end.

Federal Inspection Of Local Guard Battalion This Month
The State Guard led by Major Scheringer of Fort D Russell plans a two week August federal inspection. Alpine Company A is set for the morning of August 29 to inspect arms uniforms ammunition and equipment and unit records. Drills showing training may be requested and employers and flying school officials will be asked to release men for at least two hours.

Stamp sales fall short of quota in Brewster county
Bond and stamp sales for the first half of August in Brewster County were below half the monthly quota. G W Baines, chairman of the county War Finance committee, announced that 19 days of sales totaled 8977.20 dollars against a 20500 dollar quota.

WAAC School Inducts Members Into Army at Sul Ross
Last Friday afternoon the WAAC training battalion and Headquarters company at Army Administration school on Sul Ross college campus took the Soldier's Oath in a retreat ceremony. Lt. Van de Car administered the oath and Lt. Colonel Arnold spoke on soldierly duties and responsibilities. Women in the WAAC now gain full benefits and ranks aligning with male soldiers. obsolete auxiliary ranks were replaced by standard WAAC grades from private to sergeant.

Adult Church Brotherhood Discusses Problems Topic
Eighteen men attended the Brotherhood meeting at the Baptist church Monday evening. The topic Adult Problems in Our Churches was discussed by W. N Wright Marvin C Renfro and Alvin Swearingen. A chicken supper followed. The next meeting will be at Paisano camp grounds on Sept 20 21 with district meeting in session and state director R A Springer present. One night will be at Paisano with each person providing their own food.

The region suffers an extreme heat spell lasting three weeks with reported ranch losses and scarce winter grass. Officials note city water wells are failing and irrigation may be restricted without rain. July rainfall remains minimal at 0.21 inches, far below old timers' records. Old timers call it the harshest heat wave of the season.

Alpine Rotary Wins District Trophy With 500 Points
Alpine Rotary Club won the Charles J. Andrews Memorial Trophy for District 115 Rotary International with 500 points. The contest covered the year ending June 30, with 17 of 83 clubs entering. Roswell, New Mexico placed second. A placque will be engraved and displayed at Alpine. 100 percent attendance marked the event. Visiting Rotarians H E Jackson and Jeff Oliver attended, along with WAAC recruiter Lt Gardner. John Newell gave a vocational talk on gas oil and tires under government control.

Bodies Found Beside Wrecked Plane After Officers Missing
Fifteen officers at the advanced pilot school were promoted this week by Col. George F. Hartman base commander. One captain became major, nine first lieutenants rose to captain, one second lieutenant earned silver bars, and three warrant officers were made chief warrant officers. Promotions followed hundreds of enlisted promotions last week. major went to Capt. Thomas F. Teory. New captains include 1st Lts Apgar, Dancer Jr, Davidson, Herndon, Hay, Furman, Hellpern, McClung, Sowby, Smith, and 2nd Lt Taylor. Chief warrant officers are WOs Charles Anderson, Merle Edwards, and Paul Steg.

AFS Sergeant Receives Distinguished Flying Cross
Master Sergeant Joseph P. Ott is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with bronze oak leaf cluster by Col. George F. Hartman at the AAF pilot school for extraordinary service in the South Pacific. Citations note 24 flights totaling over 208 hours from Dec 9, 1941 to Aug 2, 1942, including Midway and Solomons actions. Ott joined the air corps in 1931 and served as an aerial engineer with Flying Fortresses, later serving as a mechanic and aircraft crew member in Hawaii and the South Pacific.

Wreckage Found After Training Plane Crash Near Prieto Ranch
Bodies of 1st Lt. Willard Bruce Wilson Jr., 23, and Lt. Charles and Lt. Robert B. Ronald were recovered near Chiati Peak, four miles from Jose Prieto’s ranch. Wilson, a West Point and Wentworth graduate, trained at Tulare and hailed from Lancaster, California. Ronald, a New Mexico Military Institute alumnus, was commissioned at Fort Riley and later joined the air corps. Next of kin notified. Col. George F. Hartman to appoint a board of officers to investigate the accident.

Balmorhea to Host Big Bend FFA Training School
The annual Big Bend district FFA training school and summer camp will meet in Balmorhea from Monday through Wednesday August 23 to 25. Attendees from 10 schools will receive training in Future Farmer activities and enjoy recreation while plans focus on better chapter programs to aid wartime food production.
