U S Senator Ralph Yarborough and Representative Richard White announce the U S Department of Labor approval of an 87392 Neighborhood Youth Corps project for Alpine Public Schools. The plan supports five in school enrollees.
Sul Ross State College announces 17 new faculty staff and administration members joining this fall under academic dean Dr. L Harlan Ford. The group includes Robert W Leopold an instructor of mathematics and physics and Wilbur D Blackmon a librarian with prior tenure at Hardin Simmons University. Kenneth Weedman will work under a 55 week program funded at 75 772 by federal government. Superintendent Jack Brock of Alpine says the program starts immediately with student workers to perform clerical custodial library and cafeteria tasks earning 1 25 per hour and capped at 10 hours weekly term time and 30 hours in summer. Coach Joe Boyd oversees the work study with principals Winn Forbes Mancill and Homer Jefferson supervising on campus.

Sul Ross State College received a work study grant of 18827 and a 54742 loan fund for student aid. About 45 students will hold on and off campus jobs including at Brewster County Memorial Hospital and Alpine Public Schools. Federal aid covers 90 percent of wages with a base rate of 1.25 per hour.
Six Alpine High School students depart for Austin to attend the third annual Attorney General's Youth Conference on Crime. Delegates include Debbie Boysen Leonel Cordova Jacobina Skinner and Mario Valero chosen by Attorney General Waggoner Carr. County Attorney Dick Bowers accompanies them. The event aims to study juvenile delinquency prevention projects in Texas communities.
Werner Hollis water works superintendent for Alpine receives the Award of Merit from the American Water Works Association for 1964 in recognition of an excellent safety record. Alpine is invited to join the organization founded in 1881.
St. Mark's Episcopal Church Pecos sponsors a Sunday field service and church picnic for attendees from Alpine Marfa Pecos Fort Davis Van Horn and Presidio. Vicar Thomas Bigelow will lead services at 11 a.m. Aug 2 at Prude Ranch near Fort Davis followed by lunch and horseback riding swimming and hiking.
Fort Davis Independent School District will for the first time get federal funds to educate children of families employed at the Fort Davis National Historical Site. Supt C J Turner applied under Public Law 874 and has a tentative 1965 allotment of 1575 dollars with 1181 dollars certified for immediate payment. Congressman Richard C White notes the law compensates districts with federally connected families when 3 percent or more of average daily attendance qualify.
The Alpine Junior Chamber of Commerce voted unanimously to support flood control for Alpine and the Big Bend airstrip project. Kenneth D. Dawson and Clyde W. Dawson, both pursuing graduate studies, visit their parents during the period described.
