Alpine imposes vaccination for all dogs allowed to run loose. Final vaccination day is Monday August 27 at City Hall from 8 am to 3 pm. Fees are 1 for males, 2 for females, and 2.50 for vaccination services. Ordinance enforcement begins after the date.
Alpine Cowboys accept invitation to join a 16-team Texas semi pro tournament, with games set in Galveston and plans to base at Buccaneer hotel. They have faced Weimar Victoria and Colum this season, posting 23 wins and 3 losses, and will play the Shell Oilers of Houston Tuesday night. A post tournament barbecue by American Legion Post No 79 awaits fans.
Twenty four Lions received perfect attendance pens from President John R. Whiteside at Tuesday’s meeting. Deputy District Governor Clyde Smith of Fort Stockton attended and presented the program. Several named members and officers are listed, including John Criswell, Wally Davis, J.D. Holman, Frank Matthews, Sam Thomas, Roy White, and Tommy Van Auken who had returned from Houston.

Approximately 1,800 people attended the opening service of the 62nd Bloys camp meeting at Fort Davis on Tuesday night with 180 to 200 at the young people's service. Rev W H Ford of El Paso preached Old Soldiers Never Die, noting MacArthur's impact in Japan, while prayers were offered by church leaders from Fort Worth Austin and San Antonio.

Robert M. Hyatt, noted radio and Paramount script writer, stays at Hilton apartments in Aline while gathering material for a novel on Big Bend National Park. Hyatt has penned Roy Rogers stories and Plastic Man comics, written 800 short novels, and contributed to major magazines including Saturday Evening Post and The Rotarian. He is under contract for T-Man and other projects with Denver and Bob Allen.
The chamber of commerce funds a 12 by 32 foot sign to direct traffic east of Sanderson on US 90. Volunteers paid 328 dollars for the sign. it will feature U.S. 90 as the shortest route to El Paso with Alpine and nearby attractions highlighted. Contributions for upkeep are asked via J Walker, Val Richardson, or the chamber office.
Miss Sylvia Smith leads as Alpine Lions club entrant in the Air Force Aid Society Miss Air Force contest. Freddy Ann Mrotzek of Silver City NM tops the field of 14, with Las Cruces and Deming New Mexico entrants close. Prizes include a Mexico City trip and over $2000 in merchandise such as a diamond studded wristwatch and a silver fox cape. Miss Smith, daughter of County Commissioner Lee Smith, is a Sul Ross State College sophomore and Zeta Tau Zeta member selected as upcoming year cheerleader.
The Alpine Future Farmers of America completed an educational and recreational tour of Big Bend National Park. Highlights included camping at Hot Springs and Headquarters in the Chisos Mountains, ranger talks, and learning about panther, black bear, wild donkey, and over 200 bird species. The group noted interest in reintroducing native wild sheep. The trip ended at Santa Helena canyon with another swim and organized games.
An OPS specialist will visit the city next Wednesday morning to assist business men. The session will cover agency services and how to access them, with representatives from the OPS on hand to answer questions and provide guidance.
TAIR draws big group at meeting with over 300 registered delegates of the Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading for its third annual conference at Sul Ross College. Miss Mina Lee says the event spans all areas and school sizes with four national reading specialists presenting.
The county budget totals 178 600 based on a 12 500 000 valuation and 98 percent collections. The state rate for 1952 is 42c and districts vary. A delegation from Alpine Public Library presented a petition signed by about 1000 taxpayers urging the county to contract with the library group to furnish library services and pay the annual sum.
The August term grand jury met and adjourned the same day after delivering two indictments. One targets Alberto Barron for murder in the shooting of Francisco Espinoza San Vicente. the other accuses Julio Villalva of burglary at the Antonio Ortiz store last March. Barron fled across the river into Mexico amid the shooting. Bond set at 1500 after a West Alpine auto crash injures Mrs. J. N. Lewis. Other names tied to theft and theft-related charges include Pedro Gallego Susana Leyva Manuel Lopez A L Pope D A Marsh and Bernardo Rey. Petit jurors to report next Monday. civil cases only this week.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the First Christian church for Mrs. J. N. Lewis 69 who died Thursday from injuries in an auto crash in West Alpine the night before Rev. Joe B. Pugh officiated. Mrs Lewis born January 26 1882 at Hartzell Alabama and had lived here five years with husband since their 1913 Cisco marriage. Surviving: husband a daughter Mrs T M Bromberg Harvard Massachusetts a brother Charles Yeager Fidorado Oklahoma a sister Mrs Ethel Burnham Grandfield Oklahoma a granddaughter three nieces and three nephews. Scatter showers and rain were reported across the Big Bend Davis mountains region this past week. Alpine saw 2.5 inches at the C. E. Davison ranch with other spots receiving up to an inch or more. Alpine’s total for the year reached 8.74 inches, about 1.50 inches below the year-ago level.
Sul Ross College geology field course near Mara Hon ends next week after fourteen young geologists complete surveying in mountainous country. Prospective geologists include R. P. At a Point of Rocks barbecue for Masonic and Eastern Star members on Saturday August 11 a lone uninvited guest caused a hush as a skunk wandered in and moved through the crowd. Attendees included guests from Van Horn Pecos and Wink and Judge J W McClendon and Mrs McClendon. The event ended without incident as the animal left and the gathering resumed.
