Funeral services were held Tuesday for Barney W Teague 58 a West Texas pioneer who died suddenly at home He lived in Alpine after early years in Fort Stockton and Jett Davis County He was a World War I veteran serving in the chemical division in France He worked as a rancher and later as an auto mechanic in Alpine He retired from city service several years ago He married Maude Adel Cooksey in 1920 Surviving are his widow five sons and four daughters James B Wheeler Rayman El Paso Charles Ernest Tamys Amy Dorothy Ella and Kathrine all of Alpine Pallbearers were J Walker W Gillett Dom Adams F P McGaughy Bil Dorris and J L Kokernot

Uniform Freight Rates To Cut Costs East Of Rockies
The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered uniform loss rates to take effect later for all railroad freight moving east of the Rocky Mountains. A uniform classification must be filed within four months, or rates stay in abeyance. Rates up to 3000 miles could drop as much as 15 percent in Southern and Western areas east of the Rockies, with little change north of the Potomac and Ohio rivers.

Great Paisano Encampment Opens Big Attendance Up 20 Percent
Reading conference begins as Paisano encampment closes a historic season. About 3000 meals served daily and a new tabernacle filled through services. Roughly 30 conversions and rededications reported with $19 000 raised for next year and $48 000 more needed for improvements on 1000 acre grounds. Attendance at Sunday school reached 904 with $630 total offerings.

Delegates Gather For Alpine Reading Conference
Delegates from a wide area are expected for an Alpine event themed The Improvement of Reading at All Grade Levels with Emphasis on Individual Pupil Needs. Alpine Woman Dies After Collision Near Barwood Residence
Mrs J N Lewis about 10 died at 4 am after a Wednesday crash on the Alpine highway near the Lois Barwood home. Her husband, driving the car, is hospitalized with a scalp wound and other injuries. Investigators say a pickup driven by Troy Mosley struck the rear of the Lewis vehicle, both cars moving east. Mosley escaped serious injury. The Lewises had lived in Alpine for years. Lewis was a Baptist church caretaker. Out of town, Anss Sean Crawford of San Diego attended the Stephens Richbury wedding. she was accompanied by Miss Glenn Richburg returning to California. Jean Crawford is Alvin Crawford’s daughter, once a resident of Alpine.

The American Legion Auxiliary held a regular session on August 6 at eight o'clock in the Legion hall. Miss Eva Rae Smith spoke about Bluebonnet Girls State in Austin and thanked the unit for supporting her. The group announced installation of new officers on August 20 at eight, with a social hour. Officers include Edith Hopson president Eddie Faye Murray vice president Telma Adams secretary treasurer Mary Ellen Foster historian Eva Willeford chaplain and Johnnie Sue Kothe. Mrs Billy Worthington chaired the program with Mrs A L Sublett and Mrs Carolyn Nelon assisting.

Amendment Election Set for November 13 in Texas
Gov Allan Shivers announced November 13 as a special election day for five proposed amendments. They would raise public welfare ceiling to 43 million, allow districts to increase maximum tax rate to 80 cents per 100, issue 75 million more in veterans land bonds, let counties create retirement and disability pension systems, and permit the University of Texas to invest part of its permanent fund beyond government bonds for higher returns. The Avalon will publish the amendment text four times.
