The body of Benino Cobos age about 40 a well known Alpine Mexican was found near the arroyo in Alpine shortly after daylight yesterday morning. He died from a bullet wound in the right thigh with inquest held by Justice of the Peace Alan R Fraser. No verdict rendered yet and no pistol ownership proven. Cobos born Fort Davis had lived in Alpine most of his life and was step son of rancher Dario Cobos. Officers investigate several mysterious circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The Avalanche announces Miss Louise Crawford will replace Mrs Earl Clark as Marathon correspondent starting next week. Crawford, a Sul Ross College student, is praised as fit to fill the role and the paper thanks Mrs Clark for her faithful years of service.
Local court schedules a session next week with grand jurors to report and a docket full of civil matters. The list includes numerous named jurors and prospective defendants, with details to be disposed of during the session.
A tablet honoring the old Ben Pickin trail drivers who ran the San Antonio to El Paso route will be unveiled at Point of Rocks ten miles west of Pt. Davis on August 16. Capt. J. B. Gillett, Marfa ex-Texas Ranger, said the ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. visitors from many areas are expected, with Gillett recounting experiences of the hardy men.
Last weekend, widespread showers and rains fell across the Trans Pecos area. Reports indicate the western region around Alpine and extending to Lordsburg New Mexico saw fairly general rainfall. Grass is doing well and feed supplies are improving in many places.
The Board of Regents holds a two day meeting on Thursday and Friday with sessions starting at 9 20. The agenda includes introduction of board members at a college assembly, a barbecue at Skillman Grove, and a drive along the State Scenic Highway. State Superintendent L A Woods will speak at a Baptist church event and later attend a school conference and barbecue at Kokernot Park.
The Texas State Highway Commission approved a 23 606 dollar appropriation to pave a 12 mile section of U. S. Highway 90 between Shumla and Langtry with base construction and double bituminous surfacing. The project will complete most unpaved stretches along U. S. 90 from Alpine to San Antonio, a 372 mile span. Also noted, a five mile segment from Pecos Hill is under construction. Mr and Mrs Duncan Scott and their baby left for College Station New Mexico where Scott will begin as instructor at A&M.
Fort Davis reports furniture for the Indian Village hotel in Davis Mountains State Park including bedrooms and sitting room pieces dishes stoves and the like arriving within days. D. E. Colp state park board chairman and Mrs Colp stayed at Hotel Limpia while Colp visited Chivos park officials.
The lucky number drawn at the Granda theatre Money Night event earned a $25 cash prize. Next Tuesday’s prize remains $25. Kinavery may serve for a turn but honesty is best in the long run.
From Octobers past, 46 Davis Mountains pioneers formed the Immortal 46 camp meeting under a great oak. This year the 46th annual gathering offers a pageant recreating the original event with the Meri list of participants, a 800 to 1,000 seat tabernacle, and four denominations represented by preachers from Fort Worth Sherman San Antonio and Los Angeles.
Sul Ross band mascot will wear new regalia for state occasions. The mascot will don leather harness with a blue musical note crest and silver buttons, and a red and gray vest bearing the Sul Ross emblem.
Former Presbyterian pastor Reverend Reemstma returns with his wife and two children Carol and Keith of Anadarko Oklahoma for a month in Fort Davis. He pastored the local church from 1918 to 1921 and will speak on Religious Certainties at Sunday service plus the family runs Bible schools and a traveling stage show. Mrs Reemstina serves as children's secretary in the El Reno Hobart Presbyterial and he continues regional work across fifty western Oklahoma counties. Other notes mention a new dormitory nearing completion and border patrol easing, with Berkeley Hall serving as headquarters and several cottages planned, along with a ready bowling alley.
An official announcement from Eighth Corps area San Antonio states Fort D A Ransell Mart will be regarrisoned by units of the Seventy seventh Field Artillery with a detachment of four regular officers and eighty enlisted men arriving from Fort Bliss El Paso to prepare the post. Extensive construction and improvements are planned as the post, abandoned two years ago when the cavalry left for Camp Ros Kentucky, is reoccupied by twenty two officers and five hundred seventy two enlisted men.
In addition to a large contraction program, minor improvements are noted. Doors of main buildings have new varnish. A demolished light post is being reduced. Student workers have improved campus appearance by weeding mowing and care.
