The Pecos Enterprise reports two showers last week for recent brides as the Trans-Pecos country shows signs of revival. On Roy Stillwell ranch south of Marathon three cuts of Johnson grass have been harvested in the flooded flats, marking the first hay crop there in four or five years with more cuts expected.
Sub district headquarters of the U S Immigration and Naturalization Service Border Patrol is being moved to Alpine from Marfa. Temporary quarters are in Berkeley Hall dormitory while permanent quarters are built. The headquarters will have eight men relocating with families. three remain and one transfers to Marfa. Government plans expand personnel to 22 and include a radio station and patrol. Captain Ivan Williams will head the station. Families are relocating this week and others later in the month.
Miss Lutie Britt, chair of the Life Saving service, announces Red Cross swimming expert M. Durrenberger from St. Louis will visit today and tomorrow. He will qualify new examiners and test local swimmers who completed the course at Locust pool. Spectators welcome as the chapter advances aquatics safety efforts. The Pecos mystery case saw an indictment dismissed. two workers identities remain unresolved.
A corner Fifth street and Ave E building in Alpine undergoes plastering and finish work finishing a long-standing adobe adorned with white plaster. The feature story recalls historic Texas Ranger cases from the 1880s and features ex Ranger Captain J B Gillett with notes on cattle feeding and ranch life in Davis mountains.
An experiment fed only high quality cattle on grain from December, while others received roughage. Ground fodder steers finished best. thirty head sold in May for 3418.43 at 113.95 per head. Lot 2 topped market at 12%C. Some lots fed mostly on roughage then finished with grain later, selling July 1 at 10.65 per cwt. Overall, the grain-fed group outperformed ordinary bred steers.
Lacking a chair, Rev. F. J. Pratt of Stockington uses a phonograph to lead a church service, adapting to the absence of seating.
Sigman Byrd, former Sul Ross State Teachers College student, spent the summer in Alpine and sold a short story to Saturday Events Post set for August 31 publication. His prior work includes Paith in American Magazine, and his tale is being adapted into a Broadway play by three New York artists.
Alpine has been tentatively chosen as the district relief commission headquarters under a new plan eliminating county administrators. Brewster Jeff Davis and Presidio counties would form one group with state approval contingent on free local facilities. Harris Smith of Brewster County is in Austin for a statewide meeting on the plan.
AUSTIN The 1695 36 long session at the University of Texas will open September 19. Registration for the fifty third annual regular session will start September 19 and 20. Classes begin September 21. Entrance exams for new students start September 12 with September 16 for condition advanced standing and postponed examinations. Convocations to orientate freshmen on September 18.
A House approved deficiency bill includes a $10,000 provision to aid establishing Big Bend National Park in Brewster and Presidio counties. Congressman R E Thomason reports Senate action impending and president’s signature likely. The park would span about one to one and a half million acres, with plans to invite Mexico to create a contiguous area south of the Rio Grande. The Chisos Mountains and Grant Canyon areas are highlighted within the proposed park.
School officials from fourteen West Texas counties will meet at Sul Ross College on Aug 12 to foster closer cooperation among county and independent district superintendents boards and teacher associations. The meeting starts at 9:30 am with principal speakers Dr H W Morelock State Supt Woods C M Elwell and H C Murdoch from the state department.
Woodrow Willingham two year old son of Alpine natives died in San Angelo after a deputy sheriff allegedly fired at the couple’s car during a dispute at a resort. Gunman Mack Shipley surrendered. murder charges filed against the Reagan County deputy. The child slept in the car when struck in the stomach. Willingham and Doris Johnson Willingham are tied to Alpine.
Benito Salazar, Brewster County's oldest resident, died last Friday at 107. Born in Monterrey, Mexico in 1821, he moved to the area in 1862 and worked on the Swing ranch north of Alpine and later for Laurence Haley on what is now the Brown ranch. Local Mexicans cite his baptismal certificate as proof of age, though it is lost. He had no known relatives and was buried in Alpine Cemetery.
A total of 23 new automobiles and trucks was registered in the county for July, per the tax collector, lifting the yearly total to 137. Last month registered 23 vehicles, two more than June's 21. Most were sold by local dealers, with only two or three exceptions.
Alpine Internationals defeated the Midland Colts 7 to 2 in a West Texas game. Battery Hernandez and Ogas powered the Alpine attack with Valadez delivering a home run. The Internationals next meet a Mexican team from Ysleta Sunday afternoon, as Ysleta is regarded among the valley’s strongest squads.

Fort Davis, July 31. Georg Grierson of Fort Davis was freed from the state hospital for the insane after a habeas corpus hearing in district court. Judge Montague granted a writ of release and remanded him to sheriff custody for ten days to allow time for a new sanity hearing. The original complaint was found defective and Grierson will have his own attorneys in the new proceeding.
The Lions club hosted a guest speaker, Senor Xavier Gonzalez, a nationally known artist and instructor at Sul Ross, who spoke on Arts in the Big Bend. He praised sunsets, discussed a McDonald Observatory picture, and plans for more works and lectures, enjoyed by members and guests.
