Clegg Named Central Elementary Principal From Premont

David W. Clegg 34 begins duties as principal of Central Elementary after a July 30 board appointment. A Premont native, he previously led Premont Primary for four years and served as a band director and teacher in various districts. He holds degrees from Texas A&I University and has multiple teaching and administrator certificates. Lopez hired as junior high classroom teacher. he trained at Sul Ross State University and taught in Fort Stockton Presidio and El Paso.

William Bolling to Head Customs Agency Office

William Bolling will head the new U S Customs Agency office in Alpine assisted by two special agents and one secretary. The General Services Administration will inspect the building on Monday August 10 with move in to follow if accepted. The agency targets smuggling including narcotics and opens several border offices.

Geologic atlas mapping underway Fort Stockton area

University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology teams led by Dr Earl Anderson and Dr Earl Lovejoy map the Balmorhea to Elephant Mountain region and Fort Davis to Bakersfield area for the Atlas Project. Many areas are unmapped and field checks supplement older student and oil company maps. Completion is planned by summer 1971 with owner cooperation aiding access. Music Camp at Paisano Baptist Encampment ends Friday noon with cantata Holy City and a three-choir concert the next morning.

Lions Host European Japanese Students at Alpine Fort Davis Barbecue

Eighty high school students from Europe and Japan will be entertained by the Lions Clubs of Alpine and Fort Davis at a barbecue Aug 12 at Mitre Peak Girl Scout Camp. About 120 people total will attend, with host families in Alpine and Fort Davis.

Dumping Violators Face Stiff Fines In Alpine

Alpine City Council warned that anyone dumping trash outside the old dump grounds east of Alpine will face heavy fines under Texas law. The council will post warning signs, seek county enforcement, and conduct periodic police checks.

Tax contract extension debated for McCreary Huey Austin attorneys

City Council studies extension of the delinquent tax collection contract with McCreary and Huey begun July 1, 1968 for one year. The firm reported $24 000 collected in 18 months and 15 percent of collections as fee. Forty four suits totaling $12 111 30 and five district court judgments of 2644 were filed or obtained, with efforts focusing on collecting delinquent taxes before filing suits.

Coyote Control Meet Planned in Big Bend Area

A meeting at the Ponderosa Restaurant in Marfa on August 13 at 8 p.m. will discuss coyote control in the Big Bend Davis Mountains country. Joe Webb will explain locating and placing 1080 poison stations to protect rancher herds and will provide release forms.

Sul Ross appoints Phil Ebensberger information director

Sul Ross State University president Dr Norman L McNeil announced the appointment of Phil W Ebensberger of Alpine as information director effective August 1. Ebensberger, a KVLF program director, will share duties in the Health and Physical Education complex while pursuing an MA degree. he is a 1955 Brewton High School graduate with prior radio and chamber of commerce experience and is married with two children.

City Council to Discuss Water Purchase Plan

City officials plan to meet with Gilmer Morriss Tuesday afternoon August 18 to discuss buying water. They will consider purchasing water by the gallon if the rate matches or is below the citys production cost.
