City Could Gain 30000 From New 1 Percent Sales Tax
Alpine would gain about 30000 annually if voters approve a 1 percent city sales tax. Mayor Homer Hudgins urged the council that part of the revenue be used for street maintenance. The 1 percent levy follows a Texas Legislature change allowing municipalities to raise sales tax to fund city services. The law takes effect August 28 with an election possible as early as September 27 and tax collection could begin October 1. notice of the election must go out 30 days prior.

Colonel and Mrs. Vincent M. Lockhart visited family in the home of his brother Dr. W E Lockhart and wife for a short reunion. Attending were Mrs. Charles W Mays of Austin Dr Lockhart s sister Mrs T V Reeves of Canyon and Miss Bethany Donnell of Spearman. They traveled to Canyon and Austin with Mrs Reeves and Miss Donnell while Vince heads to Vietnam via West Virginia and Washington for consultations.

Dormitory loan approved for Sul Ross State College
A federal loan of 1.8 million dollars for a new Sul Ross State College dormitory has been approved, with bids to be opened in Austin on August 31. City Hopes to spend about 190 200 on a municipal pool and bathhouse after bids ranged 178 790 to 217 000.
