Danish Cadets See Real Cowboys Attend Rodeo in Alpine
Danish Air Cadets from Denmark toured Texas with Alpine CAP escorts in a 12 day visit sponsored by the Texas Wing CAP and USAF. The group toured ranches enjoyed a Western chuck wagon dinner and first rodeo, and received Western hats from a Marfa rancher. Major Eigil Rechnitzer praised Alpine hosts and noted the hospitality and experiences including cowboys, cattle, and Texan cuisine.

Five Maryknoll seminarians completed a six week course of religious instruction for the children of Our Lady of Peace parish in Alpine. The program included evening classes for teens and adults and a recreational component. They will return to the New York seminary and plan to return next summer for another Alpine program.

Boys Ranch Group Plans Texas Hill Country Trip
About 29 youngsters from Boys Ranch near San Angelo, plus adult leaders, visit the Big Bend area this weekend. They will dine at Meriwether Ranch north of Alpine Saturday noon, stay Saturday and Sunday nights, then travel to Balmorhea State Park on Monday. Charles Stringfellow of Alpine is wagon boss for Brewster County’s livestock roundup, with Harper McMichael directing the Jeff Davis County drive. Both are to meet the boys at Meriwether Ranch Saturday.

The Alpine Junior Rodeo Club drew 100 entries over Friday to Sunday despite rain. Officials praised sportsmanship as Alpine public support funded the event.

New Route For Big Bend Park Road Awarded
Borsberry Construction Co. of Paso has won a £614,136 contract to build a new paved road in Big Bend National Park. The 10.6 mile route from Maverick to Castolon will include grading drainage base and a bituminous surface with visitor parking. Work starts soon with completion targeted in 300 days. The project aims to connect to Santa Elena Canyon as portions of the Rio Grande route were recently paved, opening scenic vistas and new areas for visitors.

Dallas firm Homer Hunter Associates has prepared figures on natural gas sale options for Alpine. Mayor Bill Winter is notified. Bowles Winston Co. vice president M M Hatcher says figures assume gas from Marfa Municipal Gas Corp at the gate and distribution by private interests or an Alpine municipal gas entity. He will be in Marfa soon and invites Alpine Council members and citizens to review the figures.

Heavy rains and showers across the Big Bend and Davis Mountains last weekend brought relief from a heat wave and moisture to range lands. The heaviest rainfall occurred south of Alpine causing temporary highway closures into Big Bend National Park. Chisos Basin reported 1.75 inches, while Boy Scout Ranch north of Ft. Davis measured 1.5 inches. Alpine area gauges varied with Perry Cartwright Ranch at about 0.5 inch, Otis and Keesey Kimball Ranches slightly higher, and Alpine’s Avalanche gauge recording 0.92 inches in two showers plus 0.17 inch the day before and 0.10 inch late Monday.
