The Dodson-Meane test 18 miles northeast of Alpine was plugged after losing a second string of tools. Final depth reached 1,791 feet with gas and oil shows. Planned follow up drilling possibly on Mrs All. Troud’s ranch. vast funds invested with backing from major firms. Kokernot ranch test at Wilson 40 miles south near Alpine in Sec 12 BC J V Massey at about 1,750 feet.

The project between Fort Stockton and McCamey completed and opened this week paves U S 67 from its junction with the Old Spanish Trail east of Fort Stockton to McCamey. The full U S 61 route from Fort Stockton to San Angelo is now all paved except about 55 miles between Alpine and Fort Stockton. The improved road shortens travel from Marta or Alpine to Dallas San Angelo and points north.
The West Tex chamber of commerce endorsed a Big Bone park proposal at an annual meeting in Wichita Falls. The plan would require acquiring 788000 acres, foster Mexico relations, serve as a Texas advertising medium, generate revenue, help liquidate state debt, and provide educational and recreational facilities. The resolution urged Gov Allred to back a popular subscription drive ongoing statewide for months.
Fort Davis April 21. Miss Mier Hardin 38 a former Marfa Fort Davis resident was struck by a train at a crossing. She was a Marfa High School graduate, known in Alpine and Fort Davis, and a niece of Mrs. C A Taylor of Valentine. Funeral to be at Junto. Survived by her mother Mrs Turner. Miss Hardin was connected with the Holland Coffee Shop in Alpine years ago and was sister in law of Gil L Newsom, formerly Alpine attorney now practicing in El Paso.
Austin High dominated Region 8 honors led by a 190 yard high hurdles clocking 18.7 seconds. Four other records were broken and multiple track marks fell as Exeter athletes also posted strong showings.
Sul Ross College Music department announces six free twilight concerts for National Music Week in May. Events run May 2 to May 6 with performances by Choral, Women's Glee Club, piano ensemble, Mrs Bogel’s violin students, Sul Ross and Theta Gamma, and Fort Davis high school group. All concerts 7 to 8 pm with no admission charge.
Alpine Lions announce Ladies Night next Tuesday at 1:30 with district Governor Joe Pond as guest speaker. A dinner will be served at the Methodist church followed by a musical program. The event replaces the regular Tuesday noonday luncheon.
The Women’s Glee Club of Sul Row College will present a concert at the college auditorium on Monday evening May 2. The program starts promptly at 7 p.m. and closes in the first of a series commemorating National Music Week. Admission is free.
The county Easter Seal sale totaled 1085 dollars with 86.27 retained locally. Ninety dollars go to the Texas Society for Crippled Children and 9.40 to the National organization.
