St James Church to be Consecrated in Alpine

St James Episcopal Church in Alpine to host an 11 am consecration service on Sunday April 22 led by Rt Rev C J Kinsolving II assisted by St James rector and Big Bend archdeacon Sen Robert Y Davis. A free coffee hour follows in the deconsecrated old church. A sacred concert by Sul Ross State College brass and a first performance by a Sul Ross composer will conclude events, with gifts recently received including a silver chalice, altar service and brass alms basin.

Caravan Jeep Caravan Heads to Chihuahua City for Good Will

A 109 person caravan in 10 jeeps pickup trucks and 11 airplanes will leave the Highland area this morning for Chihuahua City Mexico. Leaders from Alpine include H L Kokernot Jr Dick Rogers Ray LaBeff Gib Bell Tom Carney and David Kokernot with Mayor Hugh White and Charlie Hunter flying down. A barbecue at Pueblito will greet travelers and Mexican dignitaries will escort them into Chihuahua City where most stay at Hotel Victoria. Jesus Lozoya Solis will lead a school hospital and sports center tour at 10:30 Saturday morning followed by a barbecue at Cruz Blanca brewery. Mayor White will present Gov Solis a 50 hat and a photo lamp shade from West Texas. The caravan returns Sunday at 8 am.

Wave Of Thetis Is Investigated In Alpine Burglaries

Brewster County reports a wave of burglaries and thefts targeting Alpine youths. Officers say several teens were involved in break ins and a 19 year old faces charges as the case awaits Grand Jury action in August. Ranchers Benefit From Deer Hunters Revenue

In the Trans-Pecos region last deer season an estimated 2753 deer were killed. P B Uzzell of Alpine biologist and Game Warden Sanford J DeVoll state Brewster County ranchers earned about 55 thousand dollars from hunting privileges. About 940 deer were killed in Brewster County by 1583 hunters with 11 violations and no hunting accidents reported.

Break-in Attempt Reported at Central School

Officials say the second break-in attempt in six weeks targeted Central School Tuesday night. Three window screens were removed but catchers blocked entry. a window light was broken while reaching the latch. Principal Ken McAllister reported no damage to the building.

A renowned Philadelphia botanist and grandmother of twelve, Mrs. J Norman Henry, spends the weekend with Dr. and Mrs. Barton Warnock in West Texas.
