Alpine FFA Sweeps Sweepstakes in 1968-69 Year

Alpine FFA Chapter led by Richard Powell won the area sweepstakes at Sul Ross State College on April 12 for the 1968-69 school year. The wood judging team of Bil McKinney Joan Johnson Terry McMillan and Kenneth Peters captured first with high individual Bill McKinney. Grass judging also won with Jack Roach first and Mike Rodriguez third. Livestock judging placed second with McKinney second high, Boxer Sims third, Peters fourth. Terry McMillan also part of the team. Other schools competing were Marfa Pecos Balmorhea Traan and Imperial. Powell to enter military service in June.

Alpine School Board schedules May 10 bond election

The Alpine School Board unanimously approves a new bond election set for Saturday May 10 with three propositions. Proposition 1 maintains a tax to retire bonds, Proposition 2 seeks 1.4 million dollars for a new high school and repairs, and Proposition 3 requests 800 thousand dollars to plan a campus and additional repairs. Absentee voting runs April 21 through May 6 at the school business office.

Alpine High to Enter 22 in CYL Events at Lubbock

Alpine High School will send 22 students to Lubbock for Region 1 CYL events including golf track and literary contests. Five golf entrants play 18 holes at Meadow Brook as Audre Coggins David Dorris Raul Molinar Raul Torres and Scott Williams compete. Track group of eight includes Will Winters Guillermo Gonzales Dickie Molinat Tony Pallanez Jackie Valenzuela Eldefonso Garcia Juan Llanez and Tony Enciso. Literary team will send nine students with Sandy Cleveland Deborah Newbill Cecilia Valenzuela Arturo Rivera Randy Wilson Andy Gray Helen Ann Barter and Sacral Glasscock in spelling typing and debate events. The group departs Alpine Thursday for track and Friday for literary events.

Cemetery BBA Set April 26 Fundraiser Barbecue

Annual Alpine Cemetery Association barbecue will be held Saturday, April 26, on the lawn of the American Legion home. Serving begins at 11 30 a m. Tickets available from association members. All meat salads pies and cakes are donated. Proceeds fund Elm Grove Cemetery maintenance.

Registration of Little Leaguers will begin Monday April 21, league officials said. Registration cards will be available at each school and must be turned in within the school week.

Alpine Sets 1969 70 Tax Rate At $1 50

Alpine City Council set the 1969 70 tax rate at 1.50 per hundred dollars of valuation, up from last year’s 2.00 due to revaluation. Budget approved at 240,585, with expected next year receipts of 323,000 and sales tax of 40,000. Three incumbents sworn in for two-year terms: Paul Vogt Tom Connor Alberto Rojo. Mayor pro tem Dorothy McBride re-elected. Council discussed parking rules for recreational equipment and proposed a north side addition to City Hall plus renovation plans for the old Hollander building.

Rescue Squad Asked To Direct Civil Defense Efforts

Brewster County Mayor Homer Hudgins asked the Rescue Squad to assume Civil Defense duties. Eichholtz and Baker supported the move and discussed rescue squad props, aiming to report back to the council. Pending liability legislation prompts limits on vehicles, while the city plans to use the squad for first aid at the high school and nearby areas.
