The Immortal Grass Beneath Our Feet

By John Ingl is Next in importance to the divine profusion of water light and air three physical facts render existence possible may be reckoned the universal beneficence of grass. Lying in the sunshine among buttercups and dandelions of May scarcely higher in intelligence than those of grass and when the thief fevers ended the foolish wrangle of the market and forum closed grass heals over the scare which our descent into earth has made the carpet of the infant becomes the blanket of the dead. Grass is the forgiveness of nature its constant benediction. Filled with battle saluted with blood torn with the rats of cannon grow free again. Streets abandoned by traffic become grass grown like rural lakes and are obliterated forests decay harvests perish flowers vanish but grass is immortal. Beleaguered by winter it withdraws into its subterranean vitality and emerges upon solliciting the world. It tenaces the earth in its place and prevents its soluble components from washing into the center and destiny of nations. As obtrusive and patient it has immortal vigor and banished from the thoroughfares it bids its time to return and when vigilance has relaxed the dynasty has perished it resumes the throne from which it has been but never abdicates. It bears no Di axon ry of bloom to charm the senses with fragrance or splendor but its homely hue is more chanting than the lily of the rose. It yields no fruit in earth or air and yet should its harvest fail for a single year famine would repopulate the earth.
