Alpine School Board Accepts Principal and Teacher Resignations
Alpine Public School board accepted the resignations of principal James Crawford and two teachers on Tuesday. Several staff announced non re election. Crawford leaves after 12 years for monetary reasons and may take another post. Other staff shifts include Billy Hicks moving to Lubbock Schools and Mrs Fowlkes resigning for El Paso positions. Louise Ponder Bennett longtime resident of Alpine and Marfa died Tuesday morning in El Paso after a lengthy illness. She is survived by daughters Mrs Cross and Mrs Edwards three sons James Franklin Bennett Jr Finis P Bennett and Murphy T Bennett six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Rev Guy B Birdwell officiated graveside rites in Marfa with services at Elm Grove in Alpine led by Rev Robert Baird. She was born in West Point Mississippi and was active in the Methodist Church.

Fire Damages Rail Culvert Near Alpine
A tumbleweed blaze at the City dump grounds spread to a culvert on Southern Pacific Railroad main line east of Alpine. Firefighters extinguished the fire in five minutes. No train delays beyond slow speeds until permanent repairs. Provider: E. M. Floyd, Texas and New Orleans agent in Alpine, noted the No. 1 train engineer saw the fire and alerted the roadmaster.

Funeral services for Hal Sansom and wife in Midland
Funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Hal Sansom of Midland, who died after injuries from a two car collision near Midland Easter Sunday, will be held at the First Methodist Church. Mrs. Sansom to be buried in Bronte and Mr. Sansom in Marathon. Survived by two daughters, a son, another son missing from a 1959 Air Force crash, and several sisters with injuries reported.

Students from Marathon Fort Davis Presidio and Valentine will compete in District 87B Interscholastic League events in Alpine this weekend. Literary events are at Sul Ross State College today and Saturday and the track meet is at Alpine High School Saturday afternoon. About 190 students are expected.
