A Sunday fire caused heavy damage at the C. G. Morrison Co store in Alpine. The blaze started in an adjoining shed with a partially filled distillate barrel exploding. Office equipment in the building was a total loss while smoke damage limited retail space. firefighters contained the blaze and no estimate was available at press time.

Cowboys Open Season With Losses To Artesia Drillers
The Sul Ross Cowboys, a student club, dropped two games to Artesia N M Drillers for a child welfare fund. Attendance was light and Artesia netted 170 from the pair. Dick Dodd pitched both games as Artesia held a lead late in the opener. Krauser hit a second inning homer for Artesia.

Fire Department Gets New Equipment Vehicle
The Xipine Volunteer Fire department adds a GMC pickup purchased for service. In a courthouse vote on Saturday seven ballots were cast, with J C Coleman re elected and Ed win Fowlkes elected to the school board each receiving 78 votes. Fowlkes succeeds D I Cross Sr who did not seek re election after eight years. The county need not assume library management as the law allows contracting.

Educators To Evaluate Alpine Independent School District
A panel of about 30 visiting educators from West Texas will assess Alpine schools over April 23 to 25. The study, part of a five to six year accreditation cycle, follows a self analysis by Alpine faculties and aims to compare local findings with the visiting committee’s judgments. Dr. Noble B. Armstrong of Sul Ross State College coordinates the effort, with reports forwarded to the Texas Education Agency and the Southern Association.

Alpine District Wins Interscholastic Meet On Strong Finish
Alpine won the overall interscholastic meet with a high point total as Marfa challenged in track and field contest. John Newell led in arithmetic number sense and debate with Alpine contestants sweeping several events. Postal receipts at Alpine rose nearly 20 percent in the first quarter of 1951, boosted by new city delivery and local businesses including Big Bend Zactus Co. and several lamp shade manufacturers.

Marathon Mustang Band To Play Here On Monday
Alpine high school hosted the Marathon Mustang Band directed by E. Joe Lee in the auditorium Monday afternoon. The program featured nine numbers from popular and classical genres with Sul Ross students among the guests. Alpine bandmaster E. J. Van Fossan served cokes to visitors after the concert, echoing a prior Alpine band visit to Marathon. Mrs. Charles E. Speck departed Wednesday for a San Antonio visit with her daughter Mrs. Jack Mayberry and family.

The Alpine high school Bucks beat Sanderson 3 1 in a seven inning opener as Coach Guy Woodruff begins his first season. Gerdine Barrow struck out 10, the defense turned two double plays, and Valadez Robinson and Hernandez led the bats with four hits. The Bucks face Marathon in the next game of the 10 game double round robin. Marathon has already defeated Sanderson in a pre season contest.
