Hill's Greater Shows the largest motorized carnival in Texas plays Alpine week at West Ball park grounds Southeast Alpine. The management offers a five-cent schoolchildren matinee from to 6 p m Saturday. After the night stand the carnival moves to another city. Al Johnson says a October Aransas Pass closing of the fleet marks season end. The show has 14 rides 30 booths circle of death motor dome and acts like sword swallowers and magicians. It is advertised as the biggest thing in Texas with officials invited from across the country.
City records show building permits issued in March totaled 28500 a sharp decline from February about 80000 but higher than January roughly 10000. A total of 1955 motor vehicle licenses for 1951 were issued at the tax collector's office through the final deadline date, last Saturday. This is 120 more than the same date last year, with 1950 totaling 1829. Licenses issued in 1950 and 1951 by type were: Passenger cars 1272 and 1370, commercial 330 and 150, farm 204 and 212, truck tractor 18 and 18, farm tractor 5 and 5.
Alpine club notes list regular meetings and events with dates and places. Meetings include Chamber of Commerce directors every 2nd Monday at the . of C. building, American Legion and Auxiliary on 2nd Mondays at Legion hall, Lions Club Tuesdays at Holland hotel, Scouts roundtable on 2nd Tuesday and district committee on 3rd Tuesday, Rotary on Thursdays at Holland hotel, Pilot club on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at Holland hotel, and school trustee election on April 1 plus AAUW meeting April 12 at Presbyterian church meeting room.
The new golf course water well completed several weeks ago produced 205 gallons per hour at 65 pounds pressure in a several hour test. The pump arrived recently and set at 256 feet in a 350 foot deep hole. Water never fell more than 49 feet during testing and officials estimate about 150 gallons per minute ongoing. The Santa Fe well is being drilled with 100 quarts TNT used between 160 and 260 feet, with casing at 265 feet and planned to 390 feet. Water flow appeared at 160 and 260 feet, standing within 40 feet of the top.
Alpine Central swept declamation with three firsts and a second, while Marfa and Sanderson High plus Blackwell Junior High claimed multiple top finishes. In other events Alpine’s teams and students earned several seconds and thirds across grade school and high school divisions, with all-district casts announced by judges from Del Rio Pecos and Crane. About 150 spectators watched Alpine host the district activities for the first time in 18 years as 3000 children competed in volleyball on the same day.
Alpine and Big Bend fans will see two games this weekend as former Alpine Cowboy players join the Artesia Drillers in a Longhorn league series at Kokernot field. Sponsor Pilot club backs the event for the Child Welfare fund. Several players from Sul Ross college and local schools participated in past Southwestern Semi final play.
Alpine Texas teachers invite the public to hear Dr. Ames Millar, director of the Good Citizenship Foundation, speak at 8 p.m. next Tuesday in the high school auditorium. Millar, a widely traveled lecturer, will discuss youth interests and civic responsibility before local educators and students.
A large Alpine crowd watched the Chicago White Sox defeat the Louis Browns 3 to 1 in a tightly played exhibition at Kokernot Field. H L Kernot Jr sponsored cash awards for the game, Alpine High School band played, and the event drew about 100000 words of Western Union wire reports. Proceeds benefited Big Bend Post No 79 and the clubs, with gate receipts around $1200 each, plus Legion funds. A postgame barbecue hosted by H L Kernot Jr followed.
D L Cross ends an eight year term on the Alpine Independent School District board as election results are awaited. Carl Shults Sr acts as election judge with Mrs. Lou T. Reid and Kathryn Stucke as clerks. J C Coleman, a veteran educator, will appear on the ballot, having contributed to improving Alpine schools.
In Fort Davis last week a lamb exhibited at the Red Barn ranch showed two perfectly formed heads sharing one body. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Gay Howard, the lamb lived about fifteen minutes. The two necks joined at the base of the ears, with four ears, four eyes, and two mouths. George Rodriguez brought the unusual lamb.
The Alpine Chamber of Commerce has received 10,000 new folders for distribution to travel agencies hotels cafes service stations and to individuals seeking Alpine information. The folders feature photographs of Alpine and local sites with brief details on accommodations attractions rainfall elevation resources and more in a blue and brown on white design.
Walter E. Caldwell, 83, longtime Alpine resident, died following an emergency operation. Funeral services were held in Knoxville on March 23. He moved to Alpine in 1910 from South Texas and engaged in local business. An active YMCA director in World War I, he led various fraternal and civic groups and served as worshipful master of Alpine Masonic Lodge. He later lived in Kilgore with son Dr. Walter S. Caldwell, who died serving in World War II. He and Mrs. Caldwell then moved to Knoxville to live with their daughter, Mrs. John Montgomery. Mrs. Caldwell died about a year earlier.
Thirteen Rossonians from Sul Ross college joined sponsor John Prude at the annual state convergence of Future Teachers of Texas in Lubbock on March 29 30 31. Attendees include Dr Conal and Jo Allen plus numerous students such as James Brown Mack Steward Donald McCarron Louise Bardwell Marilyn Patten Mary Urias Socorro Pena Jesu ita Urias Carmen Muro Dora Pena Lucille Borunda Rudy Gonzales Alfonso Gonzales James Moyer Bill Noble Frank Driskill Johnny Joe Parker Lorraine Huffman Charlie Huffman Clara Galyon Ross Hise and Earle Hise. A motto about stands and falls is noted.
Citizens of Brewster county will meet Friday, April 6, at 7 30 p m at the Alpine Public Library to discuss ways and means of securing permanent financial support for the library. The meeting was called by the board of directors. Everyone who is interested in the welfare of this community is urged to attend and all organizations are asked to send official representatives. The meeting will begin prompting at 7 30 and there will be no speeches. If you have any ideas, come and share them or just show your good will by being present.
