Civic League and city officials call April 25 to 30 Clean-Up Week urging every resident to cooperate. District supervisors will oversee efforts to remove trash and brighten yards, sidewalks, and alleys with free hauling for hazardous debris. Summer visitors arrive soon. start now to present a neat city.
Wednesday rains brought general moisture across the Highlands with some heavy showers. Most ranges reported early benefit from the moisture as showers swept through the Highland country.
Mesdax Jenkins and George W. Martin hosted a Study Club gathering at Mrs Jenkins home on College avenue Thursday afternoon. An interesting program was presented and will be covered in detail by the club reporter in next week's Avalanche.
Oil lease contracts cover 30,000 acres owned by J W Merrill Frank Jones and Smith Bros with Hamilton and Patton as testers from the McCamey field. Buyers have 30 days to check titles and 90 days to begin drilling on the central section near the Merrill south pasture, about two to three miles from the Harold Thompson home. The purchasers reportedly plan to dispose of their lease.
The Alpine Rotary Club voted to stage The Womanless Divorce using club members and notable actors from the area. Proceeds will benefit the local PTA, with the show set for April 21 at the blank school auditorium and featuring a cast including Ben Berkeley and others.
High school athletes from the region will gather for the Interscholastic League meet on April 14 15 and 18 in Alpine Alpine prospects look bright for the high school in multiple events with Fort Stockton representations noted in the district and county meet previews and Sul Ross coaches directing events
Alpine High School dominated the county track and field meet held in Marathon, scoring 136 points to Marathon’s 105. Alpine swept several events led by Treadwell and Whatley in sprints, Watson and McKinney in distance, and Worthington in the vault, while Marathon hosted and praised the hospitality and sportsmanship of its visitors.
A lively note by Stivers urges residents to stop dumping train cars cans tires clothes and garbage into creek beds to prevent flies disease and water contamination. He calls cleanup week a flame to fight dirt and stresses paying debts living sanely eating wisely and thinking constructively while fighting the devil with right action and churchgoing.
Ces ar E Richardson, about 35, a former Alpine resident, was killed when a Santa Fe passenger train struck the car he and a companion rode in El Paso. He was survived by his parents Mr and Mrs A J Richardson, several siblings, and sister Mrs W D Burcham of Marathon.
The Alpine Jewelry Store is changing hands with Alfred A. Newell taking possession on April 1 and plans to stay in charge until a new manager is secured. W. F. Hadman will depart after two years, while Newell, who bought the store five years ago, has built it into a leading local business. The Hadman family will move to California for several months.
The theater section notes the artistry behind marionette performances requiring great skill and patience. Puppeteers are drawn from top studios and promising singers or instrumentalists adopt puppetry, inspired by famed figures like Gordon Craig Maeterlinck George Sand, drawing large crowds.
Members of the Texas Appropriations Committee visited Sul Ross College in Alpine to inspect facilities and discuss funding. The group, headed by Chairman Claude Teer, praised the college’s impact and urged tax measures to boost educational funding while pledging continued support for Sul Ross and other state institutions.
A carload of drilling machinery arrived in Alpine to begin work on a new oil well on the McIntyre ranch southeast of Alpine. The site, in Vernon McIntyre ranch land, lies about six miles from Alpine, with Pensing McPhail Kempeter Company of Fort Worth supplying equipment and crews. They expect spudding within two to three weeks and a 2500 foot depth forfeiture contest is mentioned. Several wells are claimed in the area, with a second location expected soon.
Note says no further developments in the proposed highway relocation project. The headquarters move is cited as due to several new counties added to the district, making Pecos more central than Alpine. The report suggests official statements indicate no new actions currently planned.
