Highlanders Meet in Alliance District 7 Convention

Delegates from district No. 7 of the Highlanders gathered in Alliance on Tuesday. Grand Secretary F. E. Sharpe spoke on the order’s 22 year record, 30000 members, and a 2 million dollar reserve. A banquet at Alliance Hotel followed and a lodge session elected Abbey Leithoff and Joseph Giles Jr as delegates.

Shumway and Pool Visit Alliance

State Land Commissioner G L Shumway and Secretary of State Charles W Pool visited Alliance to review state lands with John O Keefe and Robert Graham. They discussed land purchases and price fairness with counties setting minimum acre prices and state officials approving filings. Pool and Shumway are western Nebraska figures with potential congressional ambitions. they and their aides traveled by automobile, while local residents Marie and Elizabeth March left for Minatare to visit their mother.

State Declamatory Contest Tonight in Alliance

The state declamatory contest, postponed from Wednesday due to two Burlington bridges being out and train delays, will be held tonight at the Phelan opera house. Contestant Oral Harvey of Alliance who won the district title will compete alongside William McBride Red Cloud, George Clark Leigh, Hugh Arnold Aurora, Grace Station Weeping Water, and James Patterson Rushville with tickets from Wednesday still valid.

Burlington Grants Ten Per Cent Raise

Burlington railroad workers at Alli ance numbered in the hundreds received a voluntary ten percent wage increase for all except those earning $250 or more monthly. Telegraphers are negotiating for a raise, and others affected include workers raised by the Adamson eight hour law and those raised since March 31. The new twice monthly pay day will begin July 25 under the state law.

Commuters play delight at Alliance High School

The senior class presented The Commuters at the Imperial on Thursday night May 10. The production impressed audiences with strong acting and direction by Prof. T. Ed Crawford and was praised as one of the best home talent shows seen in Alliance. Thomas Kelly arrived Saturday for a two week visit with Norman McCorkle.

Commencement Activities Near End of School Year

Alliance public schools prepare a week of events ending with the Alini banquet at the high school gym. Senior recognition is set for May 20 at the Phelan opera house with sermons and performances. Eighth grade graduation occurs May 24 at the Phelan house, followed by senior graduation May 25 at 8 15 p.m. at the opera house with diplomas presented by Dean Fordyce.

Plans Completed For New Highways In Nebraska Panhandle

Local boosters from Box Butte Dawes and Sioux counties met in Crawford to finalize plans for federal aid highways in Nebraska. Key routes include Northwestern through Dawes and Sioux counties near Crawford, Burlington via Box Butte and Dawes counties near Maryland, and Black Hills through Box Butte and Dawes counties north of Alliance Dunlap. A road chair was named Cyrus Werte of Harrison. The group urged drainage improvements on graded roads and adoption of the new state road law centralizing management. They warned county boards to act on road dragging and maintenance.

Alliance in Alliance Nebraska Recruiting Drive Aims at Westward Band Parade

Captain James F. McKinley urges Alliance to boost enlistment in the Omaha district which covers Nebraska and western Iowa. Postmaster Graham offers five dollars to each recruit. Mayor Rousey and local officials plan patriotic parades with the band to support recruitment and banners urging civic action.
