Reports describe a Sunday night glass breaking at Ed Barry’s saloon and a Monday morning till tapping theft of 12.40 dollars. At Beckwith and Bresee’s Right store a raid yielded clothing, hats, shoes, and hundreds of items, with a $25 reward offered for info. Sheriff Reed previously solved a similar break two months earlier. The text also honors Father Devos, noting his departure and the community’s sorrow.
The Spaulding Enterprise reports a parish reacts strongly to Father Devos being moved. A nine-member committee plans Omaha talks, and a petition signed by about 95 percent of parishioners seeks to influence diocese leaders despite the Bishop’s order. Father Devos is praised for pioneer-era service.
The Elks hall is nearly finished with partitions plastering painting and plumbing done. Committees on entertainment and reception have arrangements to meet incoming trains for Sunday’s Knights of Columbus installation and a large delegation is expected. Arrangements for the Knights of Columbus in the city are completed and initiation will be held Sunday afternoon and evening at the Elks hall. A banquet at the opera house will feature speakers from Nebraska's order. The Holy Rosary parish ladies oversee the banquet. About sixty lambs will be shorn for the occasion and wool prices are expected to fluctuate afterward.
C H Vincel, a barber, departed this morning for Fullerton where he plans to establish his own shop if conditions prove favorable.
Mr. John R. Phelan promoted to General Superintendent of the C. B. & Q. Railroad was toasted at a banquet in Alliance. The event drew 60 plus prominent citizens, with 66 seats filled and music by Miss Bartz. Phelan recounted his rise from boyhood on an Iowa farm to this role, receiving a touching letter from his mother as he spoke.
The worst blizzard of the season blankets the Black Hills with two to three feet of snow. Passenger train No. 44 led by conductor McDonald is stuck eight miles past Deadwood, while train No. 43 under conductor McClellan is sidelined at Hill City due to heavy snow.
The Ladies Aid Society of Luella Nebraska hosts an annual social and fair at the M E church on Friday evening May eighteenth. Basket supper offered and all are invited to attend.
Lead Deadwood Rapid City Hot Springs Spearfish and Belfouche organize a baseball league inviting Alliance to furnish a team. Nate Hartis leads the group urging local players to join as Alliance should field a team and enter the league.
The First Presbyterian church women announce a sale and fair at the church on Thursday and Friday evenings with Japanese wedding and drill performances by children each night Admission is one cent ice cream and light refreshments offered at usual prices.
