Mrs Chas BE Clough and Miss Piste Clough entertained Tuesday evening at Mrs Cloughs home with Mrs Fred Sedwick and Mrs Jules as guests of honor. A five hundred game and a Bix course lunch accompanied by poinsettia centerpieces. Prizes included a fans and a silver lemon fork. An orchestra played during dinner with numerous attendees listed.
A Peru girls team defeated Fairbury in a close basketball game 5 to 4. The issue reports the installation of a $5340 multigraph, new Smith Premier typewriters, and new student enrollments at sixty five for the second semester. Faculty activities include a seniors’ reception, a dramatic recital, piano recitals, and Philomathean Society officer elections.
A group of Alliance business men met in McCorkle hall to organize efforts for Burlington advertising across western Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana. Committees were named to gather data for the railroad’s promotional materials, with C. A. Dow tasked to collect statistics on electric light, sewer, and water services.
E T Kibble will gather statistics on stores and banks and cement walks. Ed Marka will collect rainfall data hospital creamery churches property values. J C McCorkle to secure farmer crops data. Lloyd C Thomas to organize information for submission to the Dillineton.
Mrse Mint of Philadelphia, director of the National Art League, visits with Mrs Bellwood and daughter this week. Miss Mint travels through the area organizing art classes and would be glad to organize an art club in Alliance if sufficient interest is shown. Her headquarters are at Tacoma.
Seventy four members and eleven visitors attended the East ern Star meeting Tuesday evening. Visitors came from Washington Wisconsin South Dakota and other States. Nellie Wilson and Nell Shrewsbury were initiated. Floral addenda followed the regular business. Refreshments included chicken patties potato salad doughnuts pickles sandwiches and coffee. The meeting continued late with music and recitations.
Mrs George Wills of Dalton mother of Earl Mallery of Alliance died at her Dalton home after a long illness. Funeral set for Thursday at one in Dalton. Survived by husband, son John in banking, and daughter Mrs Barl Mallory. The Wills moved from Chadron six years ago to Dalton.
Alamance counts a robust year 1913 with cattle 5739 head horses 1918 head potatoes 110167 bushels wheat 2807 bushels butter 495109 pounds hides 134779 pounds and other goods. Shipments from Box Butte through Berea and Girard and towns Hemingford and Marsland add to Alliance’s enviable county total.
T H Barnes A R Wilson retire from farming and A Wayne Wilson plans changes in farming. A combination sale will be held Tuesday Feb 24 at Barnes place two miles NW of Alliance. Livestock and farm machinery will be offered. No bidding. highest bidder takes the item.
The Famous The Right Harper's Modern Clothes for Men Irish Company and Alliance Shoe will close at 6 o clock starting Monday February 23 to allow clerks an early supper without a post supper return. Merchants in other lines consider the plan.
In Denver on February 18 voters rejected the Denver Union Water Company sale to the city by 13 122 to 6918. They approved bonds of 5 million for the Moffat tunnel through the divide, enabling a shorter route to Denver from the Great Empire region and a direct line to Salt Lake City. Construction begins immediately as the tunnel commission acts. The water sale fight divided local papers with the News and Times backing the water company and the Post opposing.
The Alliance Creamery has received a five ton registering beam scale like railroad car weighers. A lever is pressed to punch the correct weight on a slip for the customer once weight is determined.
A reception was held at the home of Dean and Mrs Ware Monday evening to introduce Dean Croan of Sheridan to local young people. Attendees enjoyed a pleasant evening and mingling with the guest.
Claude McClellan of the southwest Alliance area was injured late last week when his horse fell with him. He sustained a severe leg wrench and remains at home using crutches.
Father Maloney, noted for his work and popularity, is called from Alliance to lead the Catholic church in Valentine. The Alliance congregation expresses sorrow at his departure as the Knicks of Columbus gift $200 and a KK.C. charm, while the Daughters of Isabella present a traveling set. Presentations occur at the Daughters of Isabella hall Thursday evening.
Hazel Howard and Monte Farris married Wednesday evening at the Presbyterian church in Northport. Alvin O. Cheeney died here after pneumonia at 17 years, 7 months, and t days. Funeral at Northport. burial in Persia Iowa. T. J. Johnson sold corn. Frank Lamm sold wheat. Mrs. Dixon’s son ill with measles. Carneys planning Scottsbluff visit. Mrs. George Elias very ill.
In February 1914 three births were noted. A baby girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Lou Shave at Lakeside on February 12 is named Eleryn Mary after her grandmothers. A son born to Mr. and Mrs. Bilas Sturgeon of Alliance is listed for February 13. A son born to Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Hubbard of Ellsworth occurred February 14 at Mrs. Zebrang's residence in Alliance. Mr. Hubbard had traveled to see the pewgon and returned home.
J P Barger the nurseryman has studied using dynamite to prepare ground for tree planting and intensified farming. He claims the method can make trees thrive in this country with proper cultivation and guarantees success, as shown by his advertisements.
Readers are urged to follow through on Mr. Barger's planting plan to establish shade and fruit trees across farms. He offers guidance on land preparation, dynamiting needs, suitable species, and timing, stressing prompt action after frost and urging Alliance-area landowners to consult him for details.
At a police court hearing 150 spectators watched Jess Selby J A J Brown Frank Curtis all colored and Charles Wilcox white face charges for disturbing the peace and fighting on Laramie avenue. Wilcox was fined ten dollars and costs after pleading not guilty while the three colored men pleaded guilty and paid the same. The incident followed an offshoot clash where a gun discharged injuring Wilcox slightly.
W J Darey, a noted photographer, secures a fine portrait lens with help from a Minneapolis friend. The lens carries fame from the Rembrandt Studio and a magazine called The Mecca, known for prize winning posing and lighting. The originals from which those illustrations were taken are now in Darey's possession.
Lee Basye, son of Mrs. Cora Basye of Alliance, wins the University’s Ivy Day Orator honor for the class of 1914. His opponent was Ralph Dickinson, Lincoln High graduate and University debater, Alpha Theta Chi member. Basye, Alliance native, is a 1912 Arte and Belence College graduate now in law studies and Acacia fraternity member.
Cottonwood Valley notes relay small town happenings and rumors. Mrs Ralph Worley improves at writing. Bert Adame of Alliance visits Hagaman's to study ranching in winter. Glen Hagaman's health status worries locals. Herb Robison buys supplies in town for his ranch. Birds signal early spring as wedding bells loom. Shirley Hagaman visits with sister Dollie. Gilhannon and Fisher visit Auntie Malley. McCoy and Donovan search for hay but fail. H B Fisher leases Gilshannon ranch. W S Coker returns to his old place.
The boys first and second squads travel to Scottsbluff Friday noon for night games. The top team then heads to Mitchell Saturday. The girls travel to Bidney Friday and Kimball Saturday with Mr Clements accompanying the boys and Miss Canfield guiding the girls.
Emerson School plans an entertainment on Friday night the 27th to raise funds for a plan to place in each building. Central School will follow with an event on March 26 to support the same project.
The Round Table Circle will host a kitchen shower in the church basement Friday evening. A program and lunch will be provided and everyone is invited.
