Final session of old council opens new lease on life

The dying city council held a busy last meeting with all members present and the new council in attendance. R M Hampton named ex officio mayor and Grace Kennedy appointed as city clerk as observers watched. Official election totals were read with minor variances and funds discussed for the incoming administration.

Fourteen-Year-Old Motorcycle Mania Leads to Jail Sentence

Sheriff J W Miller brought before Judge Tash a fourteen year old youth nicknamed Beans charged with riding eight motorcycles at reckless speeds below the legal age. Relatives testified he disobeyed warnings after being forbidden to ride. The judge sentenced him to ten days in jail, suspended, warning that future disobedience would send him to jail. The boy claimed reform and the court noted the lure of the motorcycle remains.

Small Kids Admit Guilt In Park Vandalism Case

Three boys aged seven to nine faced a casual hearing before County Judge Tash after neighbors reported they cut young trees and damaged Alliance City Park. They apologized, said they used forked sticks to make sling shots, and promised not to repeat the acts as a mother prepared to help identify the guilty child. Al Wiker and Dutch Manier departed for Douglas, Wyoming on a business trip.

Two Men Fined on Booze Charges in Judge Tash's Court

In Judge Tash's county court Edward Balfe known as Packey and W M Short were fined for liquor possession and intoxication after a Sunday arrest at Rodgers rooming house. Balfe faced constructive possession, Short pleaded not guilty to both counts, bondsmen were rejected, fines set at 100 and 50 dollars plus costs.

Harper Resigns From Alliance Chamber of Commerce

W R Harper resigned this week as a director of the Alliance Chamber of Commerce citing pressure from his public duties. The vacancy remains unfilled after acceptance of the resignation. Also noted: the Christian Art ladies circle will meet at Mrs Rockman 4 Box Butte Wednesday afternoon with a cloth donation request. Mrs Wilderness of Dunlap received medical attention in Alliance.

City Manager Appointed by New Alliance Council

Former Alliance resident N Z Kemmish was chosen city manager by five council members at the first council meeting. Salary set at 3000 a year with a plan for him to assume duties April 18 from his post as general manager of Public Service in York Nebraska. He will oversee light and power operations in sixteen cities and towns and will keep current city staff in place briefly.

Freight Rate Readjustment Promised After Omaha Lincoln Visit

Secretary George M. Carey of the Alliance chamber of commerce completed a seven day trip to Omaha and Lincoln with promises of freight rate corrections. He sought relief from discriminatory western Nebraska rates affecting Alliance and potato freight costs. Carey also spurred Burlington paving work and attracted interest from a major wholesale house to establish a branch here. He closed with talks on a county fair for Box Butte County and secured state authorization to fund it.

Special Meeting of Scottish Rite Masons Wednesday Evening

The Scottish Rite Masons of the valley of Alliance call a Wednesday meeting at the Masonic Temple to plan the spring reunion set for May 11 to 14. Degrees from the fourth to the eighteenth will be performed by Alliance and higher degrees by Omaha lodges. Members urged to attend.

Alliance Eagles Move to New Quarters Over Morgan Grocery

The Alliance lodge F. O. E. No. 136 has secured four modern rooms above the Morgan grocery with bath, buffet, reading room, pool tables and lodge hall. About forty members currently. a large initiation and reinstatement drive is planned with a big class on April 21. Prospective members urged to apply and attend the next meeting Thursday to discuss plans for the new club rooms.

Golf Pro From Omaha Club to Visit Alliance

Stanley Davies, golf professional from the Omaha Field Club, will visit Alliance late this month for a week of instruction. He will provide ground rules tips, handicap players, and suggest course layouts. Interested players should register with Bernard Holsten at Holsten drug store to book lessons at a low rate.

Friday Drive for Boy Scouts Exceeds Goal in Alliance

A Friday push by Alliance business leaders and a citizen committee raised about 2000 for two permanent Scout camps belmont and Broncho Lake. The drive cost roughly 300 for events and band transport, with additional fundraising completed by Scouts Monday. A Chadron Boy Scout band concert and roof garden program supported the effort.

Trees Purchased for Alliance Country Club Grounds

The Alliance Country Club's building and grounds committee begun work on the barren Broncho Lake site. Two hundred young trees are planted under approved specifications and will be watered by the club's own system. Construction of the golf house is underway with lumber on site and foundation sand hauled out. The week’s mild weather favors golfers who can play after 5 pm, and Sunday’s windy but crowded links-day testifies to growing interest.
