Escape of Breckinridge and party near Indian River

The World’s Javana letter describes Breckinridge and party fleeing by small boat from St Johns to Indian River, sailing sixty miles down the coast on shellfish and turtle eggs. A US gunboat halted them. Col Wood and two others met the boat and allowed parole after presenting papers. They dined on shellfish, then reached Cardenas after about thirty six hours, enduring great danger with limited sleep. The New York Herald notes generals Butler Banks and Heintzelman did not resign before the 15th and were mustered out.
