Taulbee Death report and Kincaid case in prison

Ex congressman Taulbee of Kentucky died after being shot by Kincaid on February and is survived by friends and colleagues. Kincaid surrenders to authorities and will be held for trial with defense by Senator Voorhees and Judge Wilson. Autopsy and coroner inquest planned. Taulbee’s death renews public interest in the Capitol incident. Taulbee, representative of Kentucky s Tenth district, born October 28 1851 in Morgan County, once served in Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses with noted debate and vocal power.

The Secretary of War sent surveys and plans for a channel from La Salle to Lake Michigan with locks and dams on the Tilincia and Des Plaines rivers. Two routes show costs: the Chicago route 18,282,703 and Sag or Calumet route 46,094,212. eight-foot project costs 20,883,153 and 28,855,400 respectively.

Helmick Acquitted in Neola Shooting Trial

D M Helmick, Neola Methodist minister, was found not guilty of manslaughter for shooting Ed Palmer last August after Palmer allegedly interfered with his family. The verdict, praised by locals, followed a full trial and a crowd encore in Bluffs court.

Justice for Lynchers Victim's Widow and Son Sentenced

From Minneapolis to La Crosse reports detail a Whitehall Wisconsin lynching case. The widow Mrs Olson and her son, along with Charles Johnson and Ole Sletto, were sentenced to life imprisonment with three days and a year in solitary. The courtroom scene was chaotic as Mrs Olson fainted and guards moved prisoners to Waupun. Also reported are cabinet resignations in Paris over a Turkish treaty dispute and other tragedies.

Boomers flood Cherokee Outlet as invasion overruns land

At Arkansas City on March 18 the Cherokee Outlet invasion erupts with 20 000 people entering the border and staking claims after Congress passes the Oklahoma Territory bill. Boomers mob stores for provisions, load prairie schooners, and press to settle before government curbs. U S troops reach the strip Friday morning but unrest continues as cattle stampede amid mass relocation. The outlet is not yet opened for homestead settlement. public land strip remains closed to entry under Homestead law.
