The Marion stonecutter Nicholas Hanson died at home after a large stone shifted while he used a crowbar to lift it. A rock rolled, the crowbar struck him in the stomach, and he died from the mortal wound. The incident occurred as Hanson dressed a nigger head stone, leaving a tragic mark in local reports.
Lead has been found within twenty five miles of Des Moines and a lease has been taken by Des Moines capitalists to prospect the property. Specimens show large chunks and cubes of almost pure lead from surface digs, with a vein likely several feet thick. The find location remains undisclosed pending firmer property control and arrangements.
News from Des Moines reports heavy frost in the extreme northwest corn belt, injuring growing crops and reducing quality for milling and feeding. Reports from Ruthven Estherville Charles City Sibley Rock Rapids Sioux City and nearby states confirm damage, with ice forming on some stations. Des Moines September 12 Thomas Lewis was discharged by Justice Aylesworth after the state failed to bind him over to the grand jury for the murder of Lena Peterson. Lewis testified he was in bed before 9:30 p.m. the night of the crime, supported by his mother and sister. Detectives disputed one witness on tracks from the scene to near the Lewis home. Authorities expressed disappointment at the lack of new evidence to aid further investigation.
