Political Announcement for State Senate Nomination in 1916

A political notice announces Henry Adams as a candidate for the State Senatorial District nomination in the Republican primaries of June 5 1916. The candidate pledges to run the state’s business as economically as a private corporation and signs Henry Adams, Algona Iowa.

Republican Presidential Campaign grows hotter toward June convention

The Republican race for the presidential nomination tightens with Hughes leading, Root second, Roosevelt third, Cummins or Borah fourth, and Burton or a dark horse trailing. Hughes is favored for silence on issues, while Roosevelt and Root bring acknowledged ability but divisive views. Henry Ford garners protest votes for pacifism and opposition to militarism, likely aligning with Wilson’s reelection stance. Ford praises Wilson as a peacemaker and scholar, while Wilson’s wartime leadership is praised for stability and national honor.

Silver rises as European coinage expands worldwide

Silver gains value amid increased European coinage. France doubles from about $2,000,000 to $16,000,000 yearly and England coins more than before. Current silver runs about 76 cents an ounce and may rise further. At around $1.29 it would equate to gold at 16 to 1. Nations minting 75 cent silver pass it at par and earn a margin.

The 1916 Algona High School class presented a two evening play in the opera house featuring excerpts from Shakespeare including A Winter's Tale As You Like It and an interlude from The Tempest. The house was full both nights and while the performers showed talent the overall reception was mixed and the run felt lengthy.
