Tragedy in Winterset as Denge kills wife then dies
John E Denge a Winterset hardware merchant shot and killed his wife then died by suicide. Their sons found the bodies neighbors heard revolver shots about midnight. Mrs Denge was found on the bed and Mr Denge with the revolver in his hand. He was a well known 60 year old business man. no reason for the act is given.

Iowa National Guard Faces 16 Trains for Border Call
Des Moines reports a state military estimate shows sixteen trains needed to move Iowa National Guard to the Mexican border if called up. Thirteen passenger trains and three freight trains would transport troops, with 1,514 horses and mules required for full equipment at roughly 55,500 dollars for horses. Adj. Gen. Logan says the guard would be ready within 24 hours of a call, pending railroad capacity.

Ames reports two thousand boys and girls enrolled in the acre yield corn contest run by EBC Bishop of the extension department. Fifty six counties organized and prizes include free trips to the Chicago International Livestock Show plus visits through Wisconsin Minnesota and Illinois and trips to the Ames winter short course. Wallaces Farmer of Des Moines offers a free Chicago show trip. Entries close June 7. A separate tragedy: Ole Bates dies after being crushed by a tractor started by his year old daughter. In another item Laverne Chapman, a University freshman, drowns in the Iowa River two miles north of town. He was nineteen. John H Wildman, 78, oil inspector for the fifth district and Times-Mean news actor, dies in Marshalltown.
