Hearst supporters win control of the Iowa Democratic convention by seating all Hearst delegates, endorsing William Randolph Hearst for president, adopting the unit rule, and electing Maxwell as state central committee chairman. Delegates at large include Parsons Weaver Carr and Wadsworth, with resolutions denouncing trusts and tariff policies.
Iowa law reform recommendations aim to end technicality based appeals and shift to court summoned expert witnesses. The panel urges a statute directing the supreme court to disregard technical errors absent evidence they could have changed trial judgments. Union figures and judges back the plan, though Col. Clark opposes.
I B Fay editor of the Clinton Advertiser ends a two decade old jewel theft case by recovering 1200 dollars in diamonds stolen from C A Fay of Clinton on November 2, 1902. The recovery came via Fred Bunting a former Council Bluffs saloon keeper who acted as a fence and agreed to help Fay if charges against him were dismissed. Barry Bernstein an Omaha pawn broker was later found to have handled the stones and, after Fay pressed action, Bernstein repaid the diamonds by buying them back from the gang’s buyers with an extra 400 dollars. The investigation ties into the Pollock diamond robbery of 1882 and led to several prosecutions including part of a notable criminal gang. The diamonds were turned over to Sheriff Canning. The report also notes Iowa fruit crop prospects and a column of miscellaneous items on public life.
