Early oats seeding and seed cleaning urged by Algona professor
Professor Holden urged early seeding and clean seed at an Algona oats train, stressing discing and harrowing, drilling over broadcasting, and sanitation to reduce smut. He cited Kherson as an early variety and claimed yields rise with early, clean sowing. The talk highlighted smut, seed treatment with formalin, and proper storage. The event drew about two thirds of expected attendance. A later obituary notes Dr. Walston’s death from brain tumor at about sixty days after diagnosis, born 1867 in Algona, survived by wife Ina Chambers and two children.
