St Louis Exposition Funds Hampered by New Law
Des Moines July 26 The St Louis exposition commission cannot use the extra 20000 appropriated for the Iowa exhibit due to a defect in the law. The 20000 cannot be spent until the 125000 previously set aside has been exhausted. Some departments show balances left, so a final transfer to the state treasury may occur. Executive committee met to resolve whether the new statute permits any expenditure.

Three Young Men Shot in Shannon City
In Shannon City three men John Wisner Ralph Pitkin and Charles Mounts were wounded by a BB shot near the City barber shop likely fired from the Commercial hotel by unknown assailants. The incident followed nightly harassment of the hotel with eggs and noise. Officers later arrested the landlord and his wife after forcing entry to a residence firing at them but sustaining no injuries.

Boy Arrested for Larceny at Parsons Feeder Works
William Sitler a fifteen year old worker at Parsons feeder works was arrested for larceny after entering the works office at noon and stealing two checks. He cashed one for 20 dollars and 50 cents and the other for 23 dollars remained in his possession. He is an orphan with prior trouble and aimed to go to reform school. In a separate incident Thomas Maland a 34 year old carpenter drowned after attempting to swim Des Moines river at Fraser. He tried to save a fellow swimmer John B Jara who survived by grabbing a fallen tree branch.

Young Woman Found On Street In Burlington In Distress
A refined young woman identified as Miss Todd of Washington Iowa was found on Valley street near the Delanoy hotel with her hat and white slippers in her lap. Officer Jos Enger assisted and took her to the police station where her father was summoned to retrieve her. Police suspect she may have been drugged.

Murderer Hokut shoots self in Sibley jail
Hokut, jailed for the February 18, 1903 Melvin murder of Peter Johnson, attempted suicide with a 32 caliber revolver at 1 30 yesterday afternoon. The ball perforated his stomach and left liver, a wound likened to the McKinley shooting, and doctors fear he may die. He claims he had the gun since imprisonment, a claim not believed by authorities.

Forgery Case Sparks Rural Pay Raise Bid
Waterloo July 23 Frank Burton the man wanted in Waterloo for forging a $500 check on the Iowa State Bank gathered signatures from leading farmers to petition for higher salaries for rural mail carriers. The forgery was clever and the bank hesitated only because Burton was a stranger. Burton was reportedly in Cedar Falls courting a young woman but remains at large. A separate note recalls a horse incident near Aspi? with a team runaway injuring John Hody who, though trapped, guided the team into a wire fence and survived, his leg broken yet he kept trying to stop the team to save his life.
