Woman marksman wins prize in Leadville rifle contest
At Leadville a rifle range contest saw several clubs competing. Mrs C H Scott of Breckenridge stood out as the only woman entrant and secured fifth prize with a 26 score. Her weapon was light for the crosswind but her skill impressed rivals who noted a heavier gun might have won first prize. The club converted the gold mounted briar pipe prize into cash for her trophy.

Mountain lion attack near Dubois ends in tense struggle
Lander notes tell of Ranchman Sercot and a huge mountain lion encountered in the mountains last Sunday. Sercot entered a cave where he found cubs and was attacked as a tawny form descended. He grabbed the beast by the throat but the grip failed and the fight continued.

Lion Attacks Man Then Dies in Self Defense
A large eight foot lion attacked Sercott, biting and claws raking his legs. He seized the animal’s jaw and sank his teeth into its neck, severing the jugular. The beast died within two minutes as Sercott, a 120 pound man, sustained bruises but survived the encounter. Local notices follow including travel ads and executors’ notice dated June 6, 1903.
